If not, what does it do that Smart Lock doesn't?** A: August connect is not required. August smart lock uses blue tooth so you have to be in about 15 feet of proximity to the lock with you phone. What connect does is makes the Bluetooth connection and also connects to your wifi. Then you can connect to the August smart lock from anywhere over wifi through the August connect. I like having both but again not required. Do note that if you have 2 August smart locks and want remote access, then you will need 2 August connect's as each can only pair with 1 lock. I really like this company and everything works flawlessly so far for me with the locks and the connects which I just added. **Q: What is the power input rating (voltage) for the August Connect?** A: It says 110 - 240v 50hz - 60hz. **Q: Do I need this in order for the lock to work** A: No. The lock itself works over Bluetooth which has an effective range in a house of perhaps 40 ft. The Augusy Connect connects to the August service via your home wifi and then uses the lock's Bluetooth connection--in short, it's extending the range from ~40 ft to Internet-infinite; in theory, if both you and your house have an Internet connection, you can open the lock from anywhere in the world. If you only care to open the lock when you or someone else authorized is stood in front of it, then the lock alone is enough. At first I did not want to get the August Connect due to all the negative reviews, thinking it will be just a waste. After running in to some issues with people not being able to open the door, I decided that I need the ability to lock and unlock remotely, so I bit the bullet. Should have done it Earlier! This thing works great! Yes, I had issues with connection, tried a few different spots and was able to find an outlet with a direct line of sight with the lock, shows weak connection but works great. I know when people leave or enter, I know when door is open or closed and I can remotely control the lock.
