Review: The Fluval Edge Prefilter Sponges Also Work On The Aquaclear 20, 30 & 50 Filters - UPDATE: I have been using these Fluval pre-filters for the past few years now, and they really are quite useful in easing the load on an aquarium filter's mechanical filtration. I have these pre-filters on most of my planted aquaria, and I clean them once a week, since the flow is noticeably slower by that time. The fact that the water flow in an aquarium filter can be down to a trickle within a week's time, after installing one of these pre-filters on its intake, should give the reader an idea of their superb filtering ability. These filters are also available on desertcart.com in 3 packs for about $4.88, including shipping. This is the best deal that I have seen on these pre-filters. The reader should also find of interest that while these pre-filters are sold for the Aquaclear 20 filters on the Fluval 6 & 12 gallon Edge aquariums, they can also be used on the intakes of most filters whose diameter is up to a half inch, since these pre-filters will stretch a bit. The key is to clean them weekly so that they maintain good water flow. Until you have used a pre-filter, whether it's the Fluval or one from another aquarium filter manufacturer, you have no idea how beneficial these pre-filters are in easing the job of the mechanical filtration in your aquarium filter. * Notation: In regard to Aquaclear filters, this author also uses an Aquaclear 50 and Aquaclear 70 as dedicated mechanical filters for fine filtering (water polishing) the water in my planted aquaria. Review: Helps keep my betta's fins safe - I bought these to cover the intake of my 10 gallon tank's "hang on back" filter for my betta fish. I have read horror stories of betta fins being sucked into the intake of filters and torn all up, so I wanted to prevent that for my little guy! This sponge fits perfectly over the slotted intake, and also catches algae well. When I'm doing water changes and tank cleanings, I just rinse it in water to remove any algae and put it back on. Works very well.

**Q: Is anyone using this on an aquaclear 110?  I have large fancy goldfish & cut off the tips of the intake tubes; now I know why I shouldn't have!**
A: I had to reorder intake tubes.  They sell replacement pieces and you can even order several to lengthen intake tubes.  I got mine at either Pet Mountain or Chewy.  The tube you cut the tip off can be swapped out for less than $6.

**Q: How navy inches us this sponge?**
A: 3 inches, top to bottom

**Q: Does this fit on the Fluval Spec V?**
A: I don't think so. This pre-filter is designed for the intake tube of the hang-on-back Fluval Power Filters.  I watched an unboxing and set up YouTube video by 'pecktech' to familiarize myself with the Spec V. I didn't see any place for this pre-filter. The Spec V has an overflow filtration system built in on the inside of the aquarium.

**Q: Will this fit on the aquaclear 70/110 intake tube?**
A: I am not familiar with the Aquaclear, but it was a little too large for the intake tube on my HOB filter.   I just packed around the gap at the top with filter floss, and it worked perfectly.

I bought these to cover the intake of my 10 gallon tank's "hang on back" filter for my betta fish. I have read horror stories of betta fins being sucked into the intake of filters and torn all up, so I wanted to prevent that for my little guy! This sponge fits perfectly over the slotted intake, and also catches algae well. When I'm doing water changes and tank cleanings, I just rinse it in water to remove any algae and put it back on. Works very well.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Can use with different aquarium filters

I purchased two 3.5 gallon tanks from PetSmart; however I wanted to use one as a hospital tank with minimal flow for any potentially sick fish. Although this pre-filter is designed for use with another filter it fit perfectly on my hospital tank filter. It slows the flow well and doesn’t suck up the fish. I ended up using another one of these over the intake in my 5 gallon shrimp tank. Again it fit perfectly and worked as intended. Make sure you routinely squeeze it out in your old aquarium water because it does get clogged due to the fine filter material.
