Year one I tried putting metal screening over the holes to keep debris out. That worked ok, but smaller stuff and bugs were still able to get through. I found these mesh rain barrel covers and decided to give them a try. The cover is easy to put on and cinch up, although the ties end up really long then. There is also a lot of fabric, so it falls down into the hole and under the water level a bit. The cover is doing a nice job of keeping debris out of my rain barrel.
