If you are driving a car and you have a 2nd person as a "navigator" who can help you find information as you go, this book would be ideal to have on the seat beside you.I traveled Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica last summer by motorcycle and discovered a number of places/things I wanted to see had either gone out of existence or burned down or the collection of artifacts had been sold or moved, etc., between the time my reference books had been published and the Summer of 2013. This book is current as of 2011. It does contain much information about the History of 66 which gives the reader a much better understanding of what happened on (and what happened to) the places and people associated with this historic highway. It also contains much information about present day 66. Since I will be travelling from East to West on 66 again during Summer 2014, I would have preferred the Encyclopedia to be laid out that way; starting with Illinois and ending in California. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Huge hit. Coming back from Grand Canyon West, going to Santa Fe on I-40 he wanted to stop for coffee so we stopped in Seligman in Arizona. He looks around and yelled, "We are on Route 66!". I looked at him puzzled and asked, "Yes, so?". He could hardly contain his excitement and said, "My friends are going to be so jealous, they have talked about coming to the US, rent motor cycles and travel Route 66 from Chicago to California. We stopped at all the Route 66 historic places, stayed in the "La Posada Hotel" in Windslow, AZ and after visiting Santa Fe (still on the list of historic towns along the route) made our way back up to Denver, my hometown. He could not stop talking about Route 66, so I ordered him the Route 66 Encyclopedia. Home now in the Netherlands, he shows anyone who wants to hold still for a moment and they all love it. He can show his friends where he was on the fold-out map and then show them details and pictures in the book. We just finished our East to West trip 2 weeks ago. We had lots of maps and other guides but decided to also take this one since it is alphabetical. That ended up being really handy in looking up things by the city name. Address for various attractions are not usually given so you will need other sources. I got the hardback and I think it was worth the extra cost. I read all the reviews here before making the purchase and would urge Route 66 travelers to read them. It is hard to find AND to stay on Rte 66 in every state, except maybe Kansas. We used the Jerry McClanahan EZ 66 Guide every day. We used the set of Here It Is maps some, Visitors bureaus usually have good up to date info you can pick up on the road.to supplement your array of 66 info. We posted photos etc onto a FaceBook page that is still up should you care to go to Buzzards on Rte 66.
