It is a perk and an extra that most texts of this caliber do not even consider. This volume is a straight-forward, step-by-step guide for qualitative research. It doesn't matter at what point you are with your dissertation, you can start this book at the applicable part. Each type of qualitative research is thoroughly discussed and in terms easily understood. I wish I had found this book earlier in my own dissertation process since I believe it would have helped me not only go through the process in a more timely manner but it would have enabled me to have a much stronger dissertation manuscript. I'm just glad I found it before I totally finished, so I can go through the chapters and see if I need to make any significant changes. The authors have truly taken their time and expertise to provide a very valuable resource to all qualitative researchers. ### ⭐⭐⭐ It's ok. The sample study will depress you. Kind of recommend the authors use a different sample dissertation topic next time around. Having to read a sample dissertation chapter on "The reasons why ABD doctoral students have not completed their dissertations" at the end of every chapter was distractingly despressing and despair-inducing. Those were all the reasons why I bought the darn book too!I wish they'd had some data from students who completed their dissertations--that would have been useful, having recently completed students explain how they went from feeling lost in the woods (like those in the sample) to successful completion. But, unlike in shady massage parlors, in life, this book, and your dissertation, there are no guarantees of happy endings.Still, if the sample chapters had been about a touchy-feely qualitative examination of the widgitiness of widgets it would have been the promised roadmap.I've made it to Chapter 9 and find it makes no sense as far as how to apply it to any random topic. But, I think its gist may be this, which also happens to be the key to life: a qualitative dissertation, and life in general, are like a 1980s Choose-Your-Own Adventure book. Yes, you get to make it up as you go along, and the reason no one can tell you how to do yours is because you are unique, like a special, special snowflake. So figure it out your own darn self. Or end up like one of the respondents in their sample study. Or whatever. It's your life. Basically, as you already know without reading this book, your advisor and the authors of this book can't write your dissertation for you and can't tell you what should be in it. So suck it up, buttercup. Muddle through and write something so you have something, anything, to hand in and defend. Except Amazon book reviews. Don't spend your time writing those. Or you'll never get your dissertation done.
