A timely new edition of the classic journalism text, now featuring updated material on the importance of reporting in the age of media mistrust and fake news--and how journalists can use technology to navigate its challenges More than two decades ago, the Committee of Concerned Journalists gathered some of America's most influential newspeople and asked them, "What is journalism for?" Through exhaustive research, surveys, interviews, and public forums, the committee identified the essential elements that define journalism and its role in our society. The result is one of the most important books on media ever written--winner of the Goldsmith Book Prize from Harvard, a Society of Professional Journalists Award, and the Bart Richards Award for Media Criticism from Penn State University. Updated with new material covering the ways journalists can leverage technology to their advantage, especially given the shifting revenue architecture of news--and with the future of news, facts, and democracy never more in question--this fourth edition of The Elements of Journalism is the authoritative guide for journalists, students, and anyone hoping to stay informed in contentious times. This book is to journalism what Marcus Aurelius' Meditations is to Stoics
I've been reading and referring to this book in every edition since it was first published. It is an excellent resource for reporters and journalists in all media. It contains basic guidelines about ethics and coverage, about facts, verification, and the role of journalists in a changing industry. This latest edition brings it up-to-date with content about dealing with misinformation and disinformation. Very topical. It uses primarily American sources and references, and I would really like the authors to prepare a Canadian edition with more relevant Canadian content. Still, as a general guide, it is indispensable for anyone in the business or hobby of writing, especially for media like newspapers or magazines. I only wish more local reporters would read and heed it. One topic that still needs to be addressed more fully is local media and its changing role. These have traditionally been major sources of information in smaller, especially rural communities, towns, and villages. With the closure of so many print newspapers across Canada, the remaining online-only media are not filling the gap or acting as the watchdogs that print media once performed. I'd like to see a future edition have more insight into how these smaller outlets can better serve their community audiences and what tools and views local media journalists need most.
