You can read the soil directly, by placing the probe into the soil! But, this system doesn't come with the soil probe. It can be purchased separately, or with their soil meter, which meter has nothing special about it. It's simply a good quality ph meter that can read both soil and liquid with the soil probe, or liquid only with the liquid probe, like the probe that comes with this combo meter. **Q: Will Bluelab honor warranty on units purchased on Amazon.com?** A: Hello Sean, as long as a receipt shows validity of purchase is within warranty, and meets criteria, yes we will honor Amazon purchased products. **Q: Can the probes be left in nutrient water while actually mixing or adding nutrients? Will PH up or down or other nutrients damage or messup the probes?** A: Thanks for your question! With adding nutrients, yes that should be fine to leave your probes in the solution while adjusting EC/ppm (adding your conductivity (nutrient) solutions). We wouldn't advise adding pH up or pH down directly next to the pH probe however - the preferred method for this is to add your pH up/down solution and ensure this is thoroughly mixed, then use your pH probe to check your pH levels/reading. **Q: How is this meter for plant germination different from the other meter shown.** A: I don't believe it is speciically designed for germination and seedlings.
