I spread it on the cables that are covered/coated in plastic for one machine and have not run into any problems. Because you can coat something easily with very little, one small tube would last you forever **Q: Would this be good to use on metal gears of a Sewing machine?** A: I think they may make a spray, I use the tube variety and it's pretty thick.
