Review: Excellent Find! - This is an excellent book -- I'm so glad I took a chance even though there were no other reviews. This book has 75 pages of games and activities for working with pentominos, with a few introductory pages on suggestions for a classroom teacher, as well as a few pages at the end with suggested solutions. There is a resource CD in the back with a digital copy of the book. The pages have a large, clean layout. The questions range from simple calculation to potentially impossible. I was worried it would be rectangles, rectangles, and more rectangles but there is enough variety to keep kids inspired for an entire school year, if not more. One great strength is that it teaches kid to record and tabulate solutions, which is a critical lead in for the organization needed in higher math. The book says it is for grades 4-8. The math needed is only perimeter and area so if your child works with Beast Academy, they can start this book after Beast 3A, although there is nothing babyish about it that would turn off an older child or even an adult. I also purchased Learning Resources rainbow pentominos bucket, which a great quality, and the novel Chasing Vermeer which involves pentominos in the mystery. I am going to make some out of cardstock this year and see how they work.
