It senses the subtile change in the inductance of its coils produced by the VERY slight change in density of a stud behind a sheet rock wall. The problem with finding rafters is that they are under decking, plus underlayment (probably tarpaper) and THEN the shingles. And neither the shingles nor the tarpaper are particularly uniform.
