We used a 78 lb, hybrid inner-spring/memory foam mattress that is VERY comfortable, reasonably priced, and works perfectly in the horizontal bed. I am attaching a few photos that show the basic bed I built. Missing is the matching bookcase and crown molding that ties the two together, but you'll get the idea. (The mattress looks a little lumpy in the picture because it just came out of the packaging and is still inflating. Does one need a table saw?** A: For a basic installation, which is the one that I made, you need 4 sheets of 3/4" X 4' X 8' and 2 sheets of 1/4" X 4' X 8'. Table saw is not needed but pretty useful. I went to Home Depot and they cut 80% of the pieces needed, they don't cut anything under 12 inches. I had to cut the other pieces with a table saw, very useful since the cuts were really straight. **Q: when finished, approximately how far does the cabinet stick out from the wall? (i.e.: how deep is it?)** A: 16", per the instructions. However, most people these days have pillow-top mattresses, which the instructions do not account for. You would have to modify the cut list by adding about 2" of width to the vertical panels to fit most pillow-top mattresses. This would make the murphy cabinet protrude about 18". Doing so would add any additional sheet of ply to the cut list the hardware manufacturer provides-- for budgeting purposes. **Q: How tall are the legs?** A: From the floor to the bottom of the bed it is 6" from the floor to the board the mattress sits on is 91/2" , we used a 14" thick mattress on ours and from the floor to the top of the mattress it is 22" . The instruction manual was very detailed and easy to follow, given the scope of the project (I would consider myself intermediate in skill). I love that I was able to use a high quality mattress once it was finished. It was critical to have a table saw. I used red oak and oak plywood and was able to stain it with a walnut wood stain and it turned out so nice. I added some shelving above it along with some trim boards to the face and it looks beautiful. So happy with this product. The build of the Murphy bed too about 3 days (1st day was purchase of materials and cutting each piece. The next day was the majority of construction. Another several days to finish up, paint, stain, etc).
