Get ready to explore the city in a whole new way. This innovative book for younger readers is packed with city facts, loads of flaps to lift, and unfolding pages to see inside buildings and under the streets. Children aged 5+ can learn about skyscrapers, subway systems and stinky sewers. Discover where people live and peek behind closed doors to see what's going on in houses and apartments, or why not find out about what goes on underneath the streets you walk on every day? Each page is stylishly illustrated by James Gulliver Hancock, creator of the All The Buildings That I've Drawn So Far series (Universe Publishing) and there are loads of quirky details to spot. How many giant cowboy hats can you find through the book? Created in consultation with Jill Sterrett, lecturer with the department of Urban Planning at the University of Washington. I love sitting with him and the discussions we have from the book Review: Worth every penny! - I really enjoy reading this book to my 7 year old son at night. The book is pretty massive and will take a few nights to get through it if you read it as a bedtime story. The artwork and illustrations are amazing. So much detail that it is hard to get bored with the book. The flaps that show inside apartments or underground add to the entertainment. I also purchased how airports work. I really appreciate books like this and look forward to many more!

My kid is facinated
This series by lonely planet is absolutely brilliant. We got the airport book in this series as a gift and are now onto this one. My kid is 5 years old and fascinated by anything travel and engineering related. He is fascinated by the STEM themes in this book: sewers, construction, transportation, the future. The flaps, design, and information in this book are top notch. A great book for any child ages 4-9. Plus the price is great.

Great find!
I bought this for my 5 year old for Christmas and he absolutely loves it. Nearly every day he pulls it out and studies a different section of the book. The pages have little doors to discover and some of the pages fold out to see a city block or a skyscraper. Some of the words are a little difficult for my child but he loves learning about how cities work. Great job, lonely planet!

Lots of learning
Our family is enjoying reading this book. We live in a city and this book has been a great way to answer questions about all the things we see everyday. It also makes a great coffee table book. Just fun to read.

Some great, some awful
Thereโs a lot to like about this book. Itโs got great illustrations with lots of text and lots of different themes and details to talk about. The big downside - some of the language is really problematic (see photo). There are ways to talk about types of housing beyond โsuburbs vs. projectsโ and defining areas as luxurious vs. dirty, etc. Looking for a positive since Iโm past the return date - it creates an opening to talk about difficult topics, language and word use, etc. Iโm not into banning or forbidding books, but this is not something Iโd just turn my kid loose with at the beginning without looking at together and finding things to discuss.

Great book
The book is excellent from content level, but the seller who sent it , sent a " sample copy not for resale" so guess it was very wrong on his part to do so
