We were able to see some raptors in the trees at nite, and were surprised to see how much fields and clearings came alive at night with rodents. I won’t suggest that you can ID a bird from what you see, as the resolution is to low for that, but it does allow you to find them and then bring binoculars or spotting scope to bear on them. I would really love a chance to try out a higher resolution unit to see what I’m missing, but this is a great value in my book. Even my wife who is harder to excite on things like this loves using it. I only see 1, 2 and 4X.** A: There are several versions of this device. One version is 2.5-10X but another version is 2-8X. So be aware of which you are ordering, but as someone already mentioned the base optical power is important. The lower the base power (as in 2x) the better the field of view and the higher the base power (as in 2.5x) the more potential range you have but the difference between the two is fairly minimal. When you multiply the base power you go into digital zoom and the picture quality drops. So as with the 2.5 base model if you jump to 10X which is 3 times the base power the picture quality is really grainy. Hope this helps. **Q: Battery-powered or rechargeable? And if rechargeable, what kind of cord?** A: Rechargeable and the cord comes with it **Q: What is the maximum distance for the rangefinder to accurately say how far something is?** A: I've seen over 400 yds. clear enough to ID deer in an open field. I've only used it a handful of times. This weekend it will be tested in the woods. So far it's been very impressive.
