I won't be using the elbow piece for my setup but it seems to work ok. The tolerance between the elbow and the strainer is a bit loose for a horizontal setup (the 1/2" bulkhead kit that I also bought was perfectly fine), but as long as you have it vertical it would be fine. The strainer fits fine right into the bulkhead, which is how I will be using it. If you need a water tight seal going through another object this is what you need (you can find them without the extra fittings also). I used this to add an above ground tank to an in ground pond. The filter pushes water from the pond to the tank through the bulkhead. Use a 1 and 3/4 inch drill bit to cut your hole. One strong recommendation is to get a check valve if your using this on the suction side so water can't drain back.
