Works like a charm!
One touch of a nose, paw, whisker, etc. and my pets (5 dogs & 2 cats) never touch this thing again! I've used the PetMate ScatMats for several weeks now. I have no idea why I didn't buy one sooner (okay, it's the ridiculous price for a vinyl strip)! No more repeated reminders to keep noses or paws off the table. No more pet parties while I'm not home. There is no learning curve with this; one zap and the lesson is never forgotten. The long, thin strip mat runs on a 9v battery. If you've ever participated in the kid dare to lick a 9v battery, the shock is a little milder than direct tongue contact. It's more startling than painful. Knowing the 9v won't hurt my monster mutts, I've used the high setting from the beginning (off-low-high). I leave this turned on 24/7 on the dining table, except for meal times. I've found that even if I forget to turn the mat back on, the pets avoid it. I have noticed one of the dogs paying extra attention to the manipulation of the on/off button when moving the mat. I think he's figured it out, so I'll have to keep my eye on him. I should note that the thick fur of my human-sized Alaskan Malamute is not affected buy the electric charge. He won't touch it with his nose or paws, but if it's placed where he can lay his protected, thickly figured body on it, he will reach across the mat. This is no surprise as electric training collars don't work on this type of fur coat, noting that an e-collar omits a much stronger shock than this ScatMat. As long as I remember to position the mat so that this dog can't reach over it without exposing itself to a shock, it's still an effective deterrant. The sofa size ScatMat has kept all of my pets off the furniture and the dog hair off my clothes. Again, I'm still using the original 9v battery that came with mat a couple months ago. The dogs still jump on the sofa if the ScatMat isn't laid across the sofa. The mat teaches pets to stay off the ScatMat; it does not teach the pet to stay off the furniture.

It Just Plain Works
Best $21 I ever spent. Our sweet, adorable, smart, and food-motivated (ok, obsessed) Havanese figured out how to get on the breakfast room table and eat off of any plates we didn't clear. I would find him literally on top of the table--not ok. If I lived alone with my dog, this wouldn't be a problem; I would simply not leave food on the table, push in the chairs, and that would be that. However, I have twin 8-year-old boys who don't always remember--or care--and I found myself becoming frustrated and angry with my kids AND my dog. Also not ok. So I searched amazon for a solution and found the Scat Mat. At first, I didn't like the idea of shocking my dog, but the reviews convinced me that the shock was merely uncomfortable and not cruel. When the mat arrived, I tested it by standing on it in my bare feet and putting my bare hands on it--it feels like a crackle of static electricity that just keeps crackling. It feels creepy and unpleasant, and while you definitely want to avoid the sensation, it's not painful or inhumane. So I put the mat down across the threshold of the breakfast room, turned it on, put some food on the floor on the other side of it, and left the room so my dog wouldn't associate me with the mat. It worked immediately. Over the next few days, he stepped on the mat no more than 4 or 5 times and has never crossed it since. We can leave prime rib on the floor on other side of the mat and he won't cross it. In fact, we have taken the battery pack off the mat and it now works like a cattle grate. We bought a few extra, which we take with us when we visit friends and family. We use them to create boundaries for him, which ensures good behavior everywhere we go. Seriously, the best $21 I ever spent.

pricey, very effective but the circuit lines are pretty widely spaced
I have a big window in the living room that has a 4" wide sill and my loveseat sits right in front of it. All of my dogs inevitably stand on the back of the couch and put their front paws on the sill to look out the window. This is a problem because a) they dirty up the sill (the couch is covered) and b) I have a set of sheers that are always closed and they step on them getting them dirty, tearing them or sometimes pulling them down off of the curtain rod. It's very annoying and difficult to train them from doing. This product is really useful for that. Set up is easy with a 9v battery for power and then you just lay it on the area you want to protect. There are suction cups to hold the sheet in place. On the sheet are two exposed wires running its length. When something that can conduct power crosses those wires, it creates a circuit and a mild shock is delivered. You can set the level of shock and I put it to the minimum. I tested it on myself and it was a little more painful than a static discharge from a high pile carpet. The biggest issue for me was the distance between the wires. It's wide enough that a small dog is unlikely to cover both with their paw and even a larger dog like mine (70 lbs) took a few days before she completed the circuit. When she did (the display shows how many times a shock has been delivered), the result was almost instantaneous - she no longer puts her feet on the sill. It's pretty miraculous. Getting her to do anything is usually an exercise in futility but this product definitely did the trick. Too bad you can't just rent them as it doesn't seem like reinforcement is necessary, I guess it will just go into a drawer somewhere. Highly recommended with the caveat about the spacing of the wires.

First good sleep in YEARS
First time i have slept properly in YEARS My crepuscular cats used to always scratch at the door and become active at night, as a result my wife and I have not had a good nights sleep between us in YEARS... this has solved the issue in one go I highly recommend combining this method with some calming pheremones and catnip as we tried that the second night and it made them less stressed although it does not change the effectiveness of this device... it just works either way
