My standby used to be to use a fake log (Duraflame) to start the fire and then add wood. Now I can skip right to dabbing a little paste on the wood and lighting. This stuff normally burns long and hot enough for pretty much any of the wood to catch. And a tube of this lasts for quite a long time.
