While Totoro is indeed the gray one, we had to improvise an answer for the green one because in the movie we see all of them save that big green guy. So... maybe is it Totoro's mother? A big brother? His father? She was just delighted to have an extra misterious character to fantasize!

I don't think so. Each nesting doll has Copyright Nibariki on the bottom. Nothing that identifies where it was made.
