The beacon costs more because it is smaller and has 3 channels. It is super easy to just plug in. The other one is 2nd gen and can be used as router or extender but has only 2 channels and needs to be placed on a table or surface. So if you have many users at same time, may be better to get beacon as you may need 3 channels for data flow, but if you just need it spread wifi over larger area, then save money and get the other one. **Q: Will this work with generation 1 networks?** A: Yes - however performance (range, throughput) will be lower than when paired with a Gen II router. **Q: I have a booster now, but I have to create a different network name. Will this extender simply extend the existing network - no need to switch uo?** A: Eero is a mesh network. There are no “boosters” or range extenders as you need on a conventional WIFI network. Instead the various errors nodes all add to the network.. same SSID... same speed...same everything. You have to have an Eero or Eero pro routers , you can’t plug in a “beacon” on a non-Eero network. **Q: Can I use this to add to my existing Eero pro setup (router and 1 beacon) provided by my cable company ?** A: I don't know if the cable company makes any modifications to it, but if not there should not be any issues. I added it easily to my pro setup which was originally a router an 2 beacons, now three. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Huge Homes Great WiFi *by I***E on February 18, 2023* I have set this up into very large homes… a 5000+ sf rancher with a two bedroom cottage about a 100' away, and a 6000+ sf sprawling 2 story with a central patio.In both cases we had fast Wi-Fi, but it did not reach many of the rooms in either home, and the cottage and patio were a no go zone.Presto Chango! A quick set up of the eero mesh system was a life changer.I recently moved my sewing room to the other end of the house where my son had been hard wired in, and was having trouble streaming. I purchased another beacon, and in under 60 seconds the streaming issues were resolved.I'm no tech genius... but this was pretty much plug and play. We now have a great signal everywhere on both properties. Woot! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beacon is Good for Big House *by P***S on February 15, 2023* We live in a 3750 sq ft ranch-style home. It's a hike from one end to the other. With a traditional router, we didn't get the best WiFi coverage at the further reaches from the unit. We now have five Beacon units and we can use our streaming services everywhere in the house. We do have occasional momentary freeze-ups, but cannot say whether it's our internet provider, the Beacons, or the streaming services creating them because they aren't very frequent and usually don't last long enough to warrant any deep troubleshooting.But I can say that we had a lot of internet issues over the years with single-point routers (before we did streaming), and those problems have almost entirely gone away since switching to the EERO system. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Eero system is perfect *by B***E on January 11, 2023* I have an Eero system going already in my condo. Router in office, second hub in master bedroom. Was having some grainy images on TV more often, even with HD channel services (I’m a streamer, no cords). Thought maybe adding a third hub close to TV could help, so that device could essentially confiscate the additional wifi location and not be in a bandwidth competition with other TVs and devices. BOOM SHAKALAKA! Super definition again on all my channels with or without an HD delivery. OMG why didn’t I think of this before?
