Is it appropriate to take the player cards from this expansion and use them on other expansions (such as khazad-dum)? if yes, i was thinking i would k

Yes. All of the player cards work together from all of the sets.

Does this expansion require other expansions to play, or will the original core set be sufficient?

The original core set is enough (though of course it's nice to play out the story and have access to other cards as you build your deck).
