I don't recommend this product though. Unfortunately the sound quality is terrible. I have to hold it right up to my face bc my coworkers say they can't hear me. **Q: how far away can this capture audio from?** A: I am the not manufacturer, you will have to contact the seller and ask for the manufacturers website for technical specificities. My own opinion on the matter is that microphones can record at varying distances depending on how much distortion you are willing to put up with, as you can put the GAIN on very high and hear sounds from miles away but sounds up close will be so loud it will cause clipping in your recording software unless you have double sampling and compression plugins which mitigate such problems. **Q: can it be plugged in to a smartphone?** A: NO, this device was of terrible quality.
