## Description

More than at any time in the past, Roman Catholics & evangelicals are working together. They are standing shoulder to shoulder against social evils. They are joining across denominational boundaries in renewal movements. And many evangelicals are finding the history, tradition, and grandeur of the Roman Catholic Church appealing. This newfound rapport has caused many evangelical leaders and laypeople to question the age-old disagreements that have divided Protestants and Catholics: Aren't we all saying the same thing in different language? The Roman Catholic Controversy is an absorbing look at current views of tradition and Scripture, the Papacy, the Mass, Purgatory, indulgences, and Marian doctrine. James White affirms that evangelicals and Catholics share common ground on some points. Yet there are crucial differences that remain regarding the Christian life--and the heart of the Gospel itself--that cannot be ignored.

Review: This is a great book, I learned a lot!!! - I have to give this book 5 stars. This book covers the issues with Catholicism very well. I had a hard time reading this and getting into this book. I was expecting the author to go point by point with the catholic doctrines and I expected him to show how they were wrong. Instead, he started by showing how the catholic church doesn’t believe in Sola Scriptura but instead base their faith on the interpretation of the leaders of the church and the pope. This is not a simple book to read, but I stuck with it and I learned a lot. I should read this book again it is that good. It has so much information. He shows how the body and blood of Jesus cannot be taken literally. He shows how high the catholic church has elevated Mary - oh my. He shows how sad it is that Catholics never have certainty of heaven. Their whole idea of mortal and venal sins is sad. He shows their prayers to Mary that one of the points in the prayer talks about sinners asking Mary to protect them from the wrath of Jesus!!! The catholic church talks about the Father and the son are under obligation to do whatever Mary says!!! Catholics believe in merits that can be shared with others. If you are a good catholic, then you could have more merits than you personally need and your extra merits can be added to the pool of merits and others can use your merits. They believe that the mass is a great way to receive grace. But even if you go to every mass every day, you would still not know if you will go to heaven. And if you go to purgatory, no one knows how long you would be there. They don't believe that the death of Christ is sufficient for anyone to go to heaven. Catholics are taught that they must make up or add to the death of Christ. My Catholic friend just the other day told me he has no assurance that he will go to heaven. I said, what? You don't know? How could you not know? He mentioned a part of Job where God tells Job that He (God) can do whatever He (God) wants. I said to him, what about the part where Job says that he knows that his Redeemer lives and that He (the Redeemer) will stand upon the earth someday. And Job says he will see him with his own eyes. To me Job sounds pretty sure of his redeemer and redemption. The doctrinal differences between Catholics and Protestants are many. This book is a great book to help you see the differences and to also appreciate the differences. It makes you appreciate the word of God as it was once delivered to the apostles and in turn delivered to us.
Review: Complete reudiation! - Dr White makes the most complete, systematic, and biblical repudiation of the false Roman church and its false Gospel. I believe in this book he blows the smoke of the incense away from the arrogant and cumbersome Roman doctrine, especially the Roman encyclopedic works system of justification compared to Acts 16 :31 "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved."A Catholic friend once said to me when i look at the Mormon church, I think it was modeled after the Catholic church. I told him he was a prophet. Phony, crazy, extra biblical revelation from a so called infallible tradition, and reducing Christ to something less than he is. I told him there is a name for this kind of system"cult".When you read the Catholic Catechism, you ask yourself the question, what Magesterial piety it takes to make a system so bogged down in works minutia and condition: then you think of Jesus saying in Mark: "unless you receive the kingdom like a child, you shall not enter it". Thank you Dr White that you should carry Holy scripture above the words of men and defend it to the death. We are told to meditate on it day and night and not let it depart from our lips. Oh that these Pius Roman School Men would have done the same. On the long war on the truth The Roman Catholic church has been the greatest enemy.Reformers and the true church have always known this. That a mere sinful man could be the vicar of God, and the Bishop of Rome could be God's representative on Earth, how foolish. These Popes die.The church lives and Christ is the head of his church. He did not come to earth and shed his blood to let some mere sinful man steal his Glory. There can be no peace with Rome. Spurgeon said war, to the knife with her. When we think of all the evil that has been committed under the guise of a false priesthood and the corruption in the history of a popery, as Spurgeon said i would rather be called a devil than a Catholic priest. God Bless you Dr White. Know you have friends in the cause of the truth.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Clear and concise.
*by E***Z on October 19, 2024*

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Brought clarity to some of the issues I had with this subject matter. To say the least, I found it difficult to put the book down. Though the book is not exhaustive on the subject it does make you wonder, if it does not convince you, that something downright malevolent is going on in this organization. I was brought up Catholic so I can attest to some of what was mentioned in the book. Kudos to Dr. James White. I highly recommend this book.
