You need a power adapter to use the cable with 3.5" drives but don't need the power adapter for 2.5" drives.

Bought it to see what was on my old HDD drives (HDD drives need the separate power supply) and it worked fine.

It works... but like many others comes with a barrel connector for powering larger drives. It would be nice if it came with a USB-C PD connector so you can use a USB-C cable and power brick, that everyone has at this point, to power it instead.
