ABUS 88/50 Padlock, 35210

For years I've bought the best Master lock padlocks thinking I was getting the best product, until I recently watched a youtube video whereas someone was able to pick one like a second! While most criminals I suspect would try to cut the lock, I didn't want to take a chance with what I'm securing with this lock. So this is my first real padlock and so far I'm very pleased with the product - it is heavier than I expected, seem quality made & makes me not so concerned now of the price (the price seems justified). Also the shape and length of the key (in what I researched) is why it's virtually impossible to pick (the key shaft is 1.25 inches long and looks like something you'd start your Ferrari with). I have no regrets of the purchase.

This is an incredibly sturdy lock that is built with high quality materials. The locking mechanism is exceptional. If security is your concern, you can’t ask for a better lock at this price.

I agree with the other reviewers that this is an excellent lock. However, I did knock off one star for a few reasons. First, the shackle is not spring-loaded. This is a minor point, but slightly annoying if you're used to spring-loaded shackles. Next, the key has no resistance in the keyway. If you hold the lock in a vertical position, the key will fall out, likely landing on the floor. Again, it's a minor point but it's kind of annoying if you used to locks where there's a little bit of force required to remove the key. It makes the lock feel somehow cheap or like it's missing a part, even though otherwise it feels very sturdy and high-quality. Finally, it is easy to insert the key part-way and start twisting. The lock will not unlock if you do this and there is some risk that you may jam the discs. The instructions warned against doing this. Traditional lock cylinders will not let the key rotate until it is fully inserted. It would be nice if Abus could design their cylinder to prevent rotation until the key is fully inserted. The net result of these minor points is that I don't enjoy using the lock as much as I'd like. I end up using my Stanley lock instead much of the time. It may not be quite as secure but it is also a good lock and doesn't have these issues.

I love Abus locks. Very secure and solid construction. The Abus Plus 88 50mm has a nice thick neck.

Wow, this lock is so smooth. I love how easy the U-bolt part slides into the padlock easily (a previous lock I used had a spring that forced you to press it really hard to engage which was difficult in tight quarters). The key turns smoothly as well. Quality!

These disc detainer locks can now be picked easily because there are now specialty tools made specifically for this type of lock. Worse, you can just order the tool online and have it sent to you. However, the lock still requires skill to open, even if you have the special lock pick, so not anyone can just open it super fast as if they had a key, like many can with master locks. To the best of my knowledge, it can not be "bumped," pulled open with simple force, "snap gunned," or "raked" open with a pin rake, so it is much more secure than a masterlock (or most other types of locks). Of course, anyone with the right tool will be able to quickly defeat the shackle, but for a lock that has a challenging core (which is tough to pick) and a thick protected shakle, you will have to pay much more and the lock will be MUCH larger. This would be suitable for something like a healthcare worker's locker, where snap guns or "rakes" could be used secretly but where angle grinders and giant bolt cutters would be noticed and reported.

Key doesn't work 100% of the time. Lockitt is fantastic as it turns out.

Very sturdy and potentially, secure lock. However, it comes with only 2 keys. I went to several key duplication services here in Singapore but they didn't carry the correct blank keys to make the duplicates. I'm stuck as I have a several household members that need their own key to open up the padlock.

Worked well for 2 years. Randomly disassembled itself today. Core fell out alongside the rest of the lock's innards.

This padlock has a difficult to copy key - so I have been secure in knowing that the cupboard it is locking, is unlikely to be picked. I cannot take the key out of the padlock without relocking: this is great too as it means I don't walk off accidentally with the lock still open.

Schloss ist Super, robust, ästhetisch und Made in Germany aber In der Überschrift steht 88/50 und in der Beschreibung dann wiederum 88/40 sogar mit den Maßen der 88/40 Version, deshalb war ich unsicher und da ich später dann bei Amazon das selbe Schloss in der Prestige Version (unterschied unklar) gesehen habe und die Beschreibung stimmte, habe ich lieber dieses bestellt und sogar die Version bekommen, die ich haben wollte: Blauer kleiner Karton mit dem Made in Germany Logo. Bei dieser Version hier steht noch ein C hinter der 88/50 für Carded aber bei der "Prestige Version" war auch eine Schlüsselkarte dabei, da ich bekommen hatte was ich wollte, habe diese Bestellung hier mit der verwirrten Beschreibung wieder storniert und hoffe zugleich auf das Verständnis von Amazon zu dieser Stornierung. Very nice quality. Fitted to an outdoor gate and so far working perfectly. The previous cheap lock rusted, but this looks like it should last.
