The fencing is made of a stiff plastic mesh that is designed in about 1" squares. If your dog is a pretty good size and able to jump high enough to pull on the mesh his/her weight may tear the plastic mesh although that seems unlikely since the mesh is fairly thick plastic. I will tell you I have 4 boy kitties that tried their darnest to escape but could not jump as high as the mesh, my fence is a 6' wooden privacy fence. But if you have a dog that could reach the mesh by just standing on his hind legs and tear at the mesh I'm sure sooner or later it would give. I absolutely love this system for my kitties! It gives me freedom and them freedom the entire day without worry of them getting out into trouble. I would recommend ordering extra brackets though, especially if you are connecting to a house or structure on either end, would just make it easier to connect and secure. I didn't order extra brackets and ended up using eye bolts in the brick mortar to secure the the mesh down. Also if you have a gate that you would like to continue to open but is secured when closed, my neighbor and I designed something that works perfectly for that. I will share it with you if need be.
