The acting and directing are excellent, and I was on the edge of my seat throughout the movie. However, sometimes I just hope that the disconnect writers go for as some obstacle to overcome could just be conquered in less time with more of a rewarding climax. Once again, I am feeling left alone with each of these characters when I should feel like I'm feeling the bond they could be creating. Not every story needs to feel so conflicted. Their bond was obvious and was progressing rather naturally after the bully/bullee trope which, I will admit, gets me every single time. The second act just failed in how it was delivered and the third followed suit. Cliche as many LGBTQA+ narratives go. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Agora of Lonely Love *by T***Y on Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2019* Being 17 is a French "Call Me By Your Name." ...a year earlier and of classmates/co-equals. ...a tale of awakenings and the Fates.Thomas is a farmer-family's only - but adopted - son. His mom is pregnant and yet this time, thanks to Damien's mother - the small nearby town doctor, likely to bring into the world her first successfully birthed child. He knows the clock is ticking. Her trimesters are the timeline of the film. Thomas is also alert to his budding feelings toward the male, and in particular towards Damien. These two fight constantly at school in a dance of ancient "en mask" masculinity and outright fear. Damien, the more openly exploratory, is very close to his mom and dad, with his father being the military officer and hero of his life. He too knows the clock is ticking, taking up boxing to assuage the tension of growing up "this way."As with Elio and Oliver, the Fates are very much at play with both young men and with their sense of adulthood throughout the movie. They are overly attuned to each other from the very start, and they each know it. In Being 17, their classmates and school faculty are ignorant of what drives Thomas and Damien's battles. So too are Damien's parents. All serving as blind witnesses, unlike Mr. Perlman. It is only through Damien's belated confession that his mom can become and is restored as his mother.
