What is the difference between a 1 micron 5 micron 10 micron and 20 micron filter, which one should I choose?

Micron refers to the particle size that can go through the filter. The lower the number, the smaller the particle. If you have sediment, you can probably use a higher micron filter. I have a three filter in-line system. I use a progression of filters: 20, 10, 5. The larger sediment gets filtered first, then smaller particles, and finally the smallest particles. I often use a carbon filter for my last (5 micron) filter. I have well water that has a lot of sediment and a slight sulfur smell when it isn't filtered. My three filter system makes my water clear and clean. Clean enough that my family drinks it straight out of the tap. Which micron filter you use depends on what you are trying to filter out.
