What is the diameter of the opening of the vial? I have some pearls, the largest of which is 6 mm in diameter, that I want to display in the vial.

The opening of the vial is flush with the inner diameter, which I measure to be 9.5mm (3/8"). A 6mm pearl will definitely fit.

Is the bail big enough to fit a chain through?

Yes. Not sure how thin it would have to be. I used a round leather cord. But you would have to take the clasp off one end of the chain and then thread it through and re attach the clasp.

Are the metal end caps screw on or do I glue it? What glue works best?

The metal caps do screw on I have not used glue But I believe any 1600 glue would work fine
