I began first without using the top and I was able to hang the heating lamp close to the floor when I first got them and raise it as it got older. When they were 6 weeks they were flying around and I had to put the zipper top on. That did a good job keeping them inside the brooder. After we were done with it, I was able to take it outside and scrub it out and leave it out in the sun to dry out so it would be nice and clean for the next time. I like this product. I bought it for chicks but ended up using it for two small bottle fed goats that were orphaned. It worked well for them up until about 4 weeks (3-4 lbs) when they outgrew it. It was wonderful to be able to leave them in here for a short while when I ran errands. I put a small box with a heating pad in it and the babies were fine going in there as if crate trained. Overnight, I covered it with a sheet.
