## Description

The USB Dual Pre is a full-featured high quality dual portable preamplifier and computer interface packed into a compact rugged case. It is designed to work over a wide variety of applications from remote field recording to desktop/studio tracking. Each of the two low noise input channels has up to 48 dB of clean gain with signal present and clip LED indicators. Inputs can be either XLR balanced or 1/4-inch TRS. Each of the 1/4-inch TRS outputs is buffered low impedance balanced. USB Dual Pre Project Series Applications: USB Dual Pre is powered via the USB bus. Internal 9 Volt battery, or optional external 12V power supply (or any combination of USB, battery & power supply) can be used depending on application. When running powered by battery alone, you should expect in excess of 50 hours of operation with phantom power off. Battery life will drop to approximately 20 hours (depending on microphone) when phantom powering is engaged (still enough time to get through an average session). Built-in low noise +48 Volt phantom power supply allows you to power up to 2 microphones as well as the preamplifier when running from any power sources including the USB bus. 1/8-inch TRS mini headphone jack with level and monitor mix controls on the rear allow for latency free local monitoring of the inputs while recording as well as playback monitoring of the USB bus. monitor mix is also routed to the 1/4-inch TRS balanced outputs. This lets you use the 1/4-inch outputs as either preamplifier outputs or as the monitor feed to your powered monitors. Fully compliant with the USB 1.1 specification and uses USB adaptive mode for playback and USB asynchronous mode for record. Works with the USB audio device drivers built into Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Vista and Apple OS9.1/OSX computers with native USB support No special drivers needed

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can phantom power be switched off so I can use a dynamic mic?**
A: Yes, the phantom power switch is on the back. I sometimes forget to power it on for my condenser mic! This really is a very slick little computer interface, I like it a lot.

**Q: Has anyone used the interface under linux (Debian, AVLinux, or Ubunto). Thinking of using as DSLR pre, but need an interface as well. What say you?**
A: Yup. Used it with Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Linux has low-latency drivers built-in, so you're good to go.

**Q: Can I use this for my guitar? I have an Ovation Celebrity acoustic/electric guitar.**
A: Hello, The ART USB Dual Pre should have enough gain to act as a guitar preamp, If your goal is to use it to pre-amplify your guitar output and record it via USB on your computer it will do the trick. I've had great success using mine for various esoteric computer interface challenges. It works great on Mac and Windows machines.

**Q: Does it come with the AC power adapter?**
A: USB powers it, though I understand you can order an optional AC adapter.

Excellent Value - Works with iPod 1

*by B***Y on Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2011*

I'll get to the point, this device is reasonably priced even at its highest street price. I paid $69.00 and it's worth every cent. I am a recording engineer and musician.Rugged constructionVery low noise floorPlenty of gain in mic preVersatile power supply accepting 7.5 ~ 12.0 volts AC or DCPhantom powerWorks with my iPad V1 and makes a fantastic input to Ampkit+, GarageBand, Sonoma 4Track and other audio apps with no noticible latency. This device is a great addition to those using the iPad for recording purposes.NI's Guitar Rig for iOS DOES NOT recognize this unit. Bad move on Guitar Rig's part but then their amp models are inferior to the Agile AmpKit models anyway. It is unfortunate though as Guitar Rig has a nice multitrack recording option.WARNINGS: On a PC the latency is unacceptable even with ASIO4All. Also, you must have the camera connection kit to interface this unit with the iPad. Unfortunately, along with the severely degraded battery time with latest iOS 5 "upgrade" the iPod will still not work with this unit and the camera connection kit.

The video is simply this...an Audio Technica AT897, going into the Art Dual Pre, then straight into my Canon t3i (600D). I am very happy with the result as you can hear clearly how important a pre amp is when recording with (anything) but especially a DSLR. this is a good lesson for us in understanding how important a decent pre amp is in the signal chain.So...you are buying this product because of it's practical usage and variety of features. It is small, sounds great, has low noise, and get's the job done in a pinch, with many options for powering the unit, phantom power, headphone jack, portability, etc etc. It works. It is the cheapest and therefore best solution for DSLR video people like myself, who have no money.2 things I REALLY wish: 1) some sort of mounting option, weather it be mic stand mount or camera stand mount...there videos online about how to drill holes and add your own mounting system, but bleh. Such a missed opportunity!and 2) the battery compartment. were they joking? if you can manage to figure out how to get the wires out of the way and cram the battery into the little cardboard battery compartment, then you realize it's impossible to get the thing out...I got mine out by pinching the leathery + - connectors and ripping the battery out. luckily nothing was damaged. Now, I know that I cannot push the battery in all the way. This is inconvenient and makes the unit look ugly, since the battery is always sticking out...because if I push it in, well, that's just not an option. Oh well!all in all, the juiced riggy assist is amazing and perfectly designed for DSLR people, but it's really expensive. THIS, is cheap, and I would say, in spite of the flaws and poor design, it is WORTH it for those who are on a tight budget. it's worth it because the features that matter work well and sound good. it's just that darn battery compartment.

Unbeatable value for money and no compromise in sound quality

*by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2010*

I finally got a chance to use this little beauty for two recent live recording sessions, and I am extremely satisfied with it.I recorded two live vocalists using Shure SM-58 microphones. The only musical accompaniment was a "harmonium", an Indian classical instrument that's like a keyboard driven by a hand-operated bellows like an accordion. Both the sessions were unplanned and spontaneous, recorded in a normal living room, and that's exactly the kind of situation I had in mind when I bought this unit. Earlier, I would miss out on recording such sessions because of the hassle and time required for setting up my Peavey PV-10-USB mixer, which is not exactly portable nor light-weight. OK, I do miss out on having a couple of extra mics for a background singer and the harmonium, but the compromise is well worth it in terms of sheer ease of setup, and most important, WITHOUT any compromise in sound quality. The setup with this unit is extremely simple. here are the steps I followed:1. Plug the mics into the XLR input jacks on the front2. Conenct the unit to your PC with the USB cable - if you have Windows Vista or Windows 7 it is recognized immediately as a USB device3. Select "USB audio codec" as your default recording device in Windows by right-clicking on the speakers icon in the taskbar4. Choose he recording properties that you want (I picked stereo / 16-bit / 48 kHz) and save this selection by clicking OK5. Fire up your recording software ( I use Sony Sound Forge)6. Set the levels of each channel using the hardware gain control knobs on the device7. You are ready to recordAll the above steps took me less than 5 minutes. My PC runs Windows 7 and it worked without a hitch (Windows 7 rocks, by the way!)Note that I do not monitor the recorded sound from my laptop while recording - I simply use headphones plugged into the socket at the back of this unit for real-time monitoring.Sound quality:I essentially purchased this unit to get around the limitations of my PC sound card - I wanted the A-D conversion taking place outside the PC, and that's exactly what this device does very well. It is capable of 16-bit digitization at a maximum sampling rate of 48 kHz, i.e., better than audio CD quality. Each channel's sound was crystal clear, capturing the highs and lows with zero audible distortion. I had set the gain control knobs about halfway (between 8 and 14 db on the dial) such that the levels on my recording software did not exceed -4 db on average and -1 db at peak. I could NOT tell the difference between the sound quality recorded with this device and the sound I recorded with my Peavey mixer (using the same microphones and the same singers). I don't believe that the unit itself adds any significant distortion to the sound, and you will essentially be limited only by the quality of your microphones.Caveats:1. Vocals obviously have a limited frequency range, so I cannot say what the sound quality will be for extreme highs and lows. But in the range I recorded (approx 800 Hz to 3 kHz), it was flawless.2. All my recording is in casual settings, i.e., NOT in a studio. There is a fair bit of background noise, so again, maybe there are subtle differences which may become noticeable in a studio environment using professional condenser mics.Dislikes: Just two minor cribs:(1) The choice of colours for letters/numbers makes them slightly hard to read - I need to squint hard to read them.(2) USB cable not included.Neither of these problems are significant enough to dock a star, though.Likes:1. Very compact and yet very solid build quality2. Needs no external power - draws USB power from the PC3. Extremely simple and flawless setup - I didn't even need to read the instructions4. Can handle condenser mics as it has a 48V phantom power supply5. Universal mic input jacks - XLR and 1/4"6. Headphone monitoring with its own level control - very helpfulOverall:A strong "buy" recommendation, if you want to make quick and easy CD-quality live recordings with extreme portability. Absolutely amazing value for money - there is nothing in the market at this quality and price point that I am aware of.
