Mackie MR524 5" Powered Studio Monitor (Single), Black

I use my PC mostly for sequencing/arranging on keyboards, sometimes editing digital audio, sometimes I just want to listen to awesome music that I can just turn up and just about bathe in. I used 2 Alesis M1Active 520 Powered Monitors and absolutely LOVED THEM, until after 10 years of making incredible sound, I'd turn them on, and over the past year they would start making random white noise - it kinda sounded like thunder the way it would creep in. I needed something comparable, and Alesis has discontinued them since, and aren't selling anything similar in terms of size, output and price range. I felt like I was taking a risk with these Mackie MR524's. There very few reviews on line (newly released product?), but the price was right ($119 ea at the time), and the specs seemed just a tad nicer than the Alesis units. I have to say I am a little more satisfied with these than the Alesis monitors. The frequency response is very even, there's no noticeable resonance, their volume is pretty strong, and they have some controls to adjust some of the tweeter/woofer gains. The LED isn't terribly flashy, which is a good thing. It's a single green light on the front (which maybe turns red when it clips? I haven't experieced that yet). They sound pretty great: The highs are crisp, the lows are full-sounding, but everything is very well balanced. If you are one who likes loud thumping bass in your music, look elsewhere, these are not designed for that, but as a reference monitor, they are top-notch. There is also no residual noise like the Alesis units had. That may be because those units were old, but it's almost weired, you can't even tell they are on. My one complaint is, and you should take note of this if it's an issue for you, the power switch is located on the back in a non-intuitive location. Alesis put theirs conveniently on the top surface of the unit, but these have a switch in the back. It's not worth taking a star off for that, but I didn't realize this when I bought them, just a pain to reach behind them to power them on or off. These Mackie MR524s are great, and I am very happy with this purchase.

Hello I have a couple things to say, I've owned the MACKIE MR824 's ( 8 inch ), for a while now, I am not a pro audio guy, Just average guy who takes interest in audio/audio equipment kinds of things, So what I wanted to say is, These speakers sound really great / clear / accurate / Can be turned up without issue (example some tweeter in other speakers kind of hurts my ears turned up Maybe titanium not sure..) Silk/soft dome tweeters are nice. The main thing is, - I feel, they sound best 2 ways 1. (FIRST WAY)- If you're playing at low volume you CAN use them in full range(no crossover etc) and they will sound great, as long as your room is quiet(er) / or silent like no Air Conditioner running in the same room etc, 2. (Second way)-(the way I primarily / usually use) use a subwoofer I use a crossover of 70Hz, I read/learned that cutting out the lows, takes the load off your speakers or allows them to play louder with less effort. So not only you get deep bass from subwooofer type Bass, but you can play louder. ----- TL:DR : low volume : full range (no crossover) GOOD / Bass still there, (low listening levels) high volume : Set crossover - better overall output, + better sub bass if you have a sub. I use 70Hz crossover. hope this helps. Update: 2022 /(end of) January - SPEAKER CRACKLING SOUND from the speaker box face plate(?) itself : - I've noticed something weird about the speakers, pretty sure when my *edit: ROOM gets super cold or goes hot - cold - hot - cold for reasons, I think face of the speaker makes creaks and cracking sound like from the heat having an effect. it does not happen often, but every so often I'll hear it - Feel like I'm losing my mind a little wondering if I'm hearing it or not(From the speaker box itself) haha, like a tick/cracking plasticky sound. Just wanted to put that in here. I use 3 of the Mackie MR842 now as rear left right and back speaker for 6.2 setup. They're still great speakers for my use.

I recently DISPOSED of my krk rokit 8 as it died in only 3 days time (PS do NOT buy KRK they aren't built to last nor do they sound very good) and bought the Mackie MR824 studio monitor, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The MR824 surpasses the KRK Rokit 8 in every aspect. The sound quality is exceptional, offering a balanced and precise representation of my mixes. The imaging and wide sweet spot are outstanding, allowing me to maintain accuracy no matter where I am in my studio. The bass response is powerful yet controlled, and the versatile acoustic controls ensure optimal performance in any room. The build quality is solid BUT!! the front plate is hard plastic to bear that in mind its not a bad plastic though. If you're seriously Considering anything KRK then DON'T DO IT Do not make the same mistake as me , Anyways the Mackie MR-Series is the way to go. Highly recommended!

Getting these monitors is like breathing fresh air. They replaced my 18 year old Event monitors and as soon as I played the first song off of my iTunes collection, it was immediately obvious that I should have gotten these a long time ago. These have better bass, treble, and overall clarity and separation than the previous speakers did. Even right in front of me and no wider than 3 or so feet apart, music sounds clearer, cleaner, and more widespread (I am playing PC audio thru a Mackie Onyx 2x2 USB interface right into the speakers). Being able to switch up/down on the treble and bass is icing on the cake for me. Songs in MP3 format sound cleaner and fuller and less artificial. My own music that I record sounds cleaner and more accurate. These have a very good amount of bass. I honestly can't imagine having need of the larger ones (or the option sub woofer) unless you are mixing some super low-frequency rap or electronic music of some sort. The high end is very smooth and I never realized just how fatiguing the previous speakers were on my hearing. I am sure there are superior speakers out there, but for the money these sound awesome.

Upgrading from Tannoy 402 Reveal speakers. These Mackies are great. Very good bass response and excellent overall sound quality. I compared to several others in this price range and found them all to have pluses and minuses. The Mackie seemed best overall to my ears, but I don't think you can go with Yamaha, JBL, Presonus or KRK. These are relatively inexpensive speakers and compare very favorably in their category. The 1 star off for me is that they sound a bit bright to my ears... maybe too much so. This is quite minor. The bass response is better than others and I found this my deciding factor. Competeing speakers have their negatives that I won't mention here... but the Mackie were my top pick - none are perfect. Overall they are clear, crisp with deep bass and very pleasant to listen to. Would I choose again? Absolutely. They are a really really big upgrade over my Tannoy's that are about two years old.

I had the yamaha hs5's before these and the MR624's blow them out of the water. The low end on these is so good that I don't even use my subwoofer anymore (No it's not a 12 inch subwoofer low end that shakes the entire room but it's definitely heavy enough for me.) You can hear all the sub bass notes that I couldn't hear on the yamaha hs5's. The reason I bought these speakers in the first place is because I could localize the sub with the HS5's since they didn't produce any low end and it was irritating me hearing the bass coming from the left side so I upgraded to these and I'm not disappointed. I also compared the MR624's to the MR524 and they sound pretty much the same except the 624 has more sub bass and hits harder with more punchiness. I also noticed that the +2db treble switch was more pronounced on the 624 vs the 524 for some reason so these get clearer as well in the high end if I want that. The only con I think, maybe not even a con depending on your setup. is that they're pretty deep speakers so they can look monstrous on your desk but that's probably necessary to get the low end these can achieve. If they could make the cabinets a little shallower that would be cool. The soundstage is really good in my opinion as well. Best speakers I've bought so far.

Very low noise amplifier due to the AB amplifier. Compared to a Kali, this has significantly less noise. If placed 2-3 feet away at ear level, the reduced self noise is noticeable and very welcome.

MR624 I read all the rave reviews about these and thought I'd give one a try. I knew most people have no idea what good sound is but I can't believe how over hyped these are. Tweeter is shrill. Made even more apparent by the gaping hole of lower mid range. Not terrible like the woofer, but I can't believe they paired these components and are actually selling this as a monitor. Woofer is simply terrible. It's muffled and has no resolution or openness. If you press on the woofer it is incredibly stiff which must not be helping. I tried extensively to EQ out the sound that is trapped behind that woofer to no avail. I should have known better. At this price you aren't going to get anything decent from any brand. You'd be better off buying vintage at a garage sale than buying even one of these. The sound will be much better. I was considering the Mackie HR but if this company is okay with selling these then I really can't trust them.

I have been using these for a few months and wanted to wait before reviewing. I was deciding between The KRK Rokit 5 and these and chose these, I am not disappointed. I like to produce various genres of music and find these great for that. They have the low end and then some! No need for a Sub if you are a bedroom producer. They are super clear and the way they are engineered I can have them pointing either directly in towards my ears or straight out and the sounds remains almost identical due to the logarithmic waveguide. To be honest I do notice a very slight buzz that's been mentioned in other reviews, however I maintain my five stars because I really don't notice it unless I am really trying to listen for it. It's barely noticeable and does not at all interfere with my ability to mix and master. I did purchase what I thought were magnetically shielded cables from Amazon but somewhere down the line I will purchase another higher quality set and see what difference it makes.

I love them. They are a great pair for a home studio.

Llevo un año y medio usando estos monitores, y han sido excelentes tanto para monitorear como para disfrutar música. Inicialmente, los elegí para escuchar música en alta fidelidad, pero con el tiempo, por azares del destino, me adentré en la producción musical y confirmé que fue una compra acertada. En aquel entonces, consideré comprar unos parlantes Hi-Fi activos, pero después de comparar varias opciones, estos me sorprendieron por su sonido mucho más limpio. Incluso tuve la oportunidad de probarlos en una tienda de música y compararlos con otros monitores, entre ellos los Adam T5V. Ambos suenan bastante similares, con los Adam destacando un poco más en los agudos y los Mackie sobresaliendo en los medios (aunque la diferencia es sutil). Al final, opté por los Mackie debido a su tamaño más compacto en profundidad. Su punto fuerte son las voces, que suenan naturales y bien definidas, además de su neutralidad que pese a ello para nada es un sonido aburrido. Los agudos tienen cuerpo, naturalidad y detalle excepcionales, algo que no encontré en los parlantes Hi-Fi activos que probé cuyos agudos me parecieron algo antinaturales y un poco delgados, Edifier (S2000MkIII), Klipsch (R-51PM), Audioengine (A5) y Kanto (YU6). Estos monitores mackie ofrecen un rendimiento sobresaliente a un costo accesible, además de una excelente calidad de construcción. Sin duda, los volvería a comprar.

So I use these for casual listening but that shouldn’t stop me from praising what they are capable of and I have heard others in the lineup and they fairly do a good job. I fact very good. They handle bass right. They do mid freq well. They do excellent with higher range of the spectrum. Fact that they adjust with your surroundings with functionality given at the back - they are simply awesome. Having said that - they make high end audio home theatres look and sound ok or less good. After these I sold my home theatre. I replaced my car speakers. I love these monitors! If you are looking for sound at this price range go for these instead of the usual 5.1 setups and you will hear what god gifted your ears with.
