Are three 74HC595's used in one project? I broke one since the pins were ripped by me pulling it out of the breadboard too hard.

Yes they are. However this kit assumes you already have a complete Pi with power supply, case, keyboard & mouse, monitor, etc.

Issues with the i2c module:the instructions you give in the tutorial are outdated and not applicable to the rpi3 and python3 - any suggestions?
