So why, oh why, are you buying relatively expensive strips of turf - quality and seed mixture known? - and then planning to put the Coco Coir beneath it on your prepared lawn bed??? It will soon be October, with the soil still warm. These are ideal conditions to sow grass seeds. The grass seeds will take about 10 days to germinate. The best method is to mix the Coco Coir into the soil at say 500g (that's 5 handfuls) per square metre into the top 2 inches (50mm) of the soil. This will give a lawn seed bed that's called a tilth. On the handle of an ordinary garden rake, put a mark on the shaft one metre from the handle end - I use a wrap of pvc insulating tape. Then use the tip of the rake to draw one metre squares into the tilth, using the mark on the handle as a guide so that the lawn bed ends up as a series of squares - a grid. Then sow the grass seed by sprinkling at the rate of 100g per M2 - that's a handful per square that you have marked on the tilth. Once that is done, get some pre-planting grass seed fertilizer - high in phosphorous. Then with a rake gently stir the seed and fertilizer into the tilth one grid at a time. Finally gently tamp the mixture of Coir Coco conditioned soil, grass seed and pre-fertilizer to ensure the seeds are in good contact with the tilth and finally water the whole lot using a fine rose to avoid washing the seed into clumps. It is a much, much, cheaper and overall easier method than buying and then laying heavy strips of turf - that need sharp, river-washed sand brushing into the adjoining edges, tamping down with a heavy plank and then copious watering - and will give a far better, weed-free lawn. **Q: can this be used as a mulch?** A: Coco Coir is a very light in weight organic product with high water retention properties. That makes it a good mulching material in situations where it is unlikely to be blown away by the wind. If it is used in a windy garden such as I have, then I would and do use a heavier medium such as bark chippings as the top layer after lightly forking/ mixing some coco coir into the top 2" / 50cm of the soil. **Q: Can I use this for bedding for my Chinese water dragon** A: Yes I would recommend this. It’s very safe non chemical clean soil **Q: Is this suitable for palm trees?** A: I believe it is. Very good quality Coco Coir ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Light and airy for plants, good value returning customer for this product. *by T***N on 8 April 2025* The 50L Canna compost has been purchased before, it's easy to use, light and airy for various horticultural uses : sowing seeds, potting on, good as a mulch in the garden, growing tomatoes as well repotting house plants ( although the coir doesn't have fertilizer I usually add sea weed fertilizer when watering plants, you can also add perlite to it when doing a seed mix. Has got good moisture retention but I keep an eye on moisture levels during warm spells.
