Take a drill and manually clean the paint from the inside of the split pin holes. Apply a little grease. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Read the negatives as well as the positives *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 18 August 2026* Opened the box and lifted the B & D workmate out, reassured of a well built weighty item. Opening the instruction leaflet and looking for the how to assemble the remaining parts onto the framework left me at a loss. No clear diagram to follow just a mass of black smudge. I had read in the reviews that uTube was the best option. Clear and simple how to video made assembly of the accessories a joy and I did pause and rewind a few times just to get more tutorials. I’m glad I didn’t give up and return the item. After assembly was completed the workbench is as good as my old B & D when it was new which had lasted over 20yrs. This replacement is solid with excellent framework for sturdiness and the handles revolve smoothly to the required width. Speaking of the winding handles, the holes on them are for fitting the tiny spigot pins which secures the handles, turn each and you will note that one side of the hole is recessed and that directs the tiny black pins into them and a gentle tapwith a hammer will feed it through. After considering a 1 Star I have now given a 5 star review but those who like me were considering returning the Work Bench due to the poor instruction leaflet just go on uTube and your prayers will be answered. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Value - Assembly No Problem *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 17 October 2026* Very pleased with this workmate, I found assembly to be easy - just remember there are two types of plastic block, one for the front jaws and the other for the back. I would say that they have tried to make economies over the original - plastic parts, thinner metal , no washers on the bolts and of course you have to make it up yourself. The diagrams do not have enough detail to make it at all easy to work out what is what.Fortunately, I have had a number of such benches over the years and a lot of practical experience in assembling all manner of equipment.It is not absolutely essential to have a third hand but it will make assembly substantially easier.The bench itself is reasonably well made althoughthe finish is not as clean as I would like it to beSeveral of the parts of the metallic legs are deeply scratched and have sharp edges.The springs on the closing part of the bench are very thin, lightweight and I have NO confidence that they will last.I believe they will be the first item to fail on the bench.The "legs" which make the bench dual height snap into place firmly but are reliant on plastic components which are also likely to fail due to wear and tear.The "vice" will do it's job to hold some items.The plug in plastic holders are also of a lesser quality than those I have had with B&D benches in the past.Bear in mind that they are a hardened plastic which have No padding and likely to mark wood and the design is such that work, unless very shallow will not be held in place for anything rigorous.Sanding or planing as examples, especially with power tools.The bench is however stable enough to use with appropriate clamps to allow completion of such jobs.Overall, the bench will do its basic job.
