When you play it you will only hear a very faint sound - not enough for practice. You will need headphones and a small amplifier to hear properly. I have tuned it up, but can get no sound from it at all unless I actually pluck the strings.** A: Hi I have just played my daughters and you should be able to get a reasonable level of sound when Not connected to an amplifier/speaker. It should play at a low level so as not to disturb anybody in the next room or next door if practising late at night. When amplified the sound and tone is very good, have you applied rosin to your bow, sounds silly but just check,a and if you have fitted the bridge yourself is it the correct way.any problems ask again. **Q: Are the strings any good or are they awful?** A: Hi. I do play Bass guitar so although I am new to the Violin and the tuning I did have a good idea what to expect for my money and was pleasantly surprised with the EV-81. I am sure a more seasoned player could point to things on it that could be better but for anyone wishing to learn from scratch I can't see why they would wish to look futher than this instrument.You get a decent bow, rosin, OK strings, and four fine tuners - a must for the beginner. It also comes with a nice case. Headphones and mini to standard jack cable are provided but neither are of great quality although fine for practicing which is, after all, what most who will buy this violin will wish to do.It is certainly not a silent violin but it is relatively quiet compared to an acoustic one so I doubt you would irritate friends and family whilst you are learning so long as they were not in the same room as you. I found the tuning quite easy but it would go out of tune overnight for the first few days until the pegs seemed to bed in, then it seemed to settle down and has kept pretty well in tune since.It is of quite solid construction and for the price I paid I really doubt if I could have got a better instrument.I certainly don't think I have been fiddled with this purchase.
