The LEGO® Ideas Book: You Can Build Anything!

We bought this book when it first came out and now that the price has dropped we're buying it for pretty much every birthday party we go to! Like other reviewers have said, this is a fantastic book and so different from most other Lego books (we do love a lot of those too). It's not a catalogue style book aimed at Lego collectors. Instead it's a book for all us passionate builders out there who like to make things by themselves. If you buy sets, build them and then put them on the shelf to admire them, then perhaps this is not for you. However, if you look at new Lego sets in terms of components and what you can do with them, then this book is a gem. It doesn't take away your own or your kids' creativity but gives you lots of inspiration and clever tips. My kids mainly love to build themselves scenes, ships and buildings for lots of minifigure action play and they've picked up lots of new ways of using bricks (like the great sideways spaceship wings) and discovered components that can be incorporated into ever more ambitious schemes (the collapsing drawbridge has been used in various ways in different buildings). We've also branched out into new areas of play... Inspired by the micro building, I managed to build a tiny house nightlight for my youngest. We also love the profiles of the designers of the models. It's nice to hear about other people's inspiration and obsessions. Lego is such a fantastic and enduring toy (some of our collection dates back almost 50 years) but a lot of the current stuff is so license heavy that you don't get many bricks for your money and it doesn't encourage as much open ended play. This book is a great template for not just for lego building but for other forms of creative play and visual art. I feel it is helping my kids to find their creative voices, by being stimulated, by finding inspiration, by learning (but not copying) from what others' have done and then doing it their own unique way.

Got this for pur son who has asd and can struggle with imaginative play but loves lego. Its very good and it is exactly what it says 'ideas'. It is not a step by step like you would get with some of the small lego sets. There are different sections of the book with ideas for vehicles, houses and sturctures, mosaics, world adventure (pirate ship etc) etc. This was ideal for our son as he has a good grasp of how things go together but if your child needs step by step, this is not in the book. Highly recommend, will be buying more of these types of books for him.

I was sold on the idea of the Lego Ideas Book by the front cover alone. We have a big tub of Lego at home and the thought of getting some good/fresh ideas for both of our kids (ok and us!) was the reason for the purchase. Overall the book is great - there are some truely fabulous models and ideas which we have tried to build and also improve on. Plus it has led to many topics for our "Lego Competitions". My only slightly negative comment (hence 4 stars as opposed to 5 stars) would be that I do feel that there could have been less specialist parts used in the models. We have a mixture of Lego made in the last 30 years, so it's not all 2x4 blocks, but sometimes it's not always possible to get the look of the model right.

My 8 yr old son, 6 yr old daughter and their mammy love this book. Yes, many of the examples are made with specialised bricks, but that makes them all the more interesting. The examples aren't there to be duplicated, but to inspire, so not having all those bricks pictured doesn't matter. The book is like a visit to Legoland. If it would contain step 1 to finish as in ordinary Lego instruction booklets, it wouldn't be able to contain so many lovely pics of finished projects as it does in its 200 (!) pages. It is not just nice pics though, it does contain very useful basic building info - the starting pages of each section contain individual pictured bricks suggested for vehicles / buildings / space ships etc. Gonna order another one for birthday present for their friends!

This is a beautiful book lots of brilliant ideas but that's all there are if you are looking for instructions (like the ones that come in the lego box) this is not for you. It's a series of different pictures of things that can be made but not instructions on how to make them. When you have someone that likes following instructions to build this does work.

My children love this book as we tend to buy loose lego rather than model sets. It has given them plenty of ideas as they have tried to build the models from the pictures and then extended on these ideas. I think this has helped them learn new skills as they now can improvise with the pieces which they don't have and try a alternative. This has enabled them to accomplish the basic skills of lego construction and learn which pieces are the best to use for what you wish to achieve without them having to rely on a set of instructions which can at times limited their creative potential and fun. It also works out a lot cheaper too. Saying all this we love the sets as well we all just love lego.

Purchased this for Grandson, age 6 years, as part of his Christmas. As you can't see inside the book before purchasing it was hard to see if book was suitable for a 6 year old. Some pages look a bit over his head, but as he's not getting it till Christmas Day I will not know this for certain. His Mum can always put it away for a while till she thinks he's old enough for it if she feels its too complicated for him. The book in general is well made and illustrated so my Grandson might surprise me and pick all the Ideas up easily.

Great ideas, would expect for more detailed building instructions.

Book was in good condition, just one corner dinged, and very useful starter for Lego projects. No detailed instruction as I thought but can work out most of what to do from the pictures.

I bought this book for my grandson. He is just starting to build with Legos and can't even read yet. The pictures are pulling him in and I think he'll enjoy the book for many years to come.

Very nice ideas, however it should have more instructions and require less "tailor-made" pieces for building
