Review: Battery powered finger pulse oximeter - does what it says on the tin... - I bought this after a CPR course leader recommended this (type) of product. He said whipping one of these out of your first aid kit bag would give a frightened heart attack patient immediate confidence in you! I live next door to a public defibrillator (so could get a call any day) and I already have a blood pressure monitor (for personal use) so I thought - why not? It was super-easy to set up with the (supplied) batteries. Obviously, I immediately tested it on my middle finger (been in hospital a few times so I knew the drill - and it was dead easy to use) and it gave me two figures: my blood oxygen level was 96 (anything above 95 is OK); can't remember my heart rate but it sounded normal... I can't comment on the accuracy (as - of course - I have not done any comparative testing) but I gave 4* for accuracy as it felt to me like it was giving good results. IMO, this is a good bit of kit to have in your bag if you are a first-aider - lightweight, not that expensive... Also very useful if you ever think you may need to report a patient's condition (e.g. a relative) to emergency services.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: the pulse is giving odd readings-ihave changed the batterries**
A: I once had a pulse of 149 and spo2 of 36%. This was a battery issue though. A quick change should sort it. If not. Try cleaning the finger area of the pulse ox where the light comes from. Also, a grubby or polished nail will give false readings. In addition, try warming it up a bit first. Mine doesn't like the cold too well. Finally, a pulse ox is constantly calibrating itself of the last value it received. You should always discredit the first value you find and allow about 60-90 secs for it to be accurate.

**Q: What is this device for and do I need one?**
A: It gives you a basic, quick check of how much oxygen is being carried by the blood. The reading is a saturation level I believe, with 100 representing the maximum your blood could carry...ie 100%. If your level drops for some reason it can explain why you may be feeling poorly. You ONLY need one if you have some kind of underlying medical condition really.I have the 'full set' so I can check all my vitals any time I need to. (glucose/BP/Oxygen levels/temperature)This is the first thing an ambulance crew tend to do routinely. If you're healthy and fit, you don't need one.

**Q: Does this store data enabling you to wear the device overnight and download SPO2 and HR data in the morning onto a PC/Mac?**
A: No,it only gives a reading for a short time when applied.

**Q: is this CE approved??**
A: The product description is fairly confused about this, In some places it says CE 0473 in others CE 0123. Notified Body number 0473 is Intertek and 0123 is TUV. Both have directories of products they have certified on their web sites and I couldn't find this product on either of them. It also claims conformance to ISO EN 13485:2003 which is a rather outdated management system standard for medical equipment suppliers, not for products (the current version is 2016).

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Battery powered finger pulse oximeter - does what it says on the tin...

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great oximeter, but watch the price
*by Y***E on 19 November 2020*

I bought this oximeter back in August after the first lockdown, but I did notice this fluctuated in price a lot. I managed to get it for £17 when it had settled down, but I saw it go up to something like £30 or so. I don't really approve of them taking advantage of these unfortunate times, but I guess that's the life of supply and demand. What's in the box: -Oximeter -x2 AAA batteries -Lanyard -Rubber coving -A case -Instructions It's really easy to use - press the white button, attach it to your finger and wait a few seconds. It will read your oxygen level (SpO2) and pulse rate clearly on the red display. Very rarely, but sometimes it can misread the levels, for example wearing nail varnish can affect this, so just try again. After 5 seconds of removing your finger, it automatically turns off, so you don't need to press or hold down the button when finished. It's really lightweight and can fit in your pocket, or around your neck with the lanyard. This oximeter is great to have in general, but good for anyone who may be paranoid/anxious about coronavirus symptoms (e.g. shortness of breath), or, if you are caring for someone. It does state that this is supplied to the NHS across the UK and I think it's a good piece of equipment to have in your medical box.
