Sharpeners PS-MED01 Blade Medic

Great compact sharpener. I have been borrowing one of these from my father for a year or two as and when I have needed it - and now thought it was about time to get one of my own and another for my Mother-in-law. For a number of years I have owned some serrated kitchen devils, that were blunt beyond comprehension - but my wife wouldn't let me get rid of them..... the serrated ceramic tool on this has allowed me to sharpen these back to nearly new.... EXCELLENT. The tapered diamond rod has allowed me to sharpen scissors, secateurs, sharpen the scallops on a bread knife and put a tip back onto a kitchen knife.... again....EXCELLENT. The carbide 'V' sharpener has put a useable edge on blunt kitchen knives, and on a machete type chopper we use for kindling that was frankly as sharp as a dessert-spoon!......EXCELLENT. (Be aware this will take metal away from your blades in BIG chunks so you don't want to be using this very often). As the packaging states, this section of the tool 'repairs' worn, damaged and blunt blades; so forewarned is forearmed! Finally the ceramic sharpening 'V' is the part that gets the most use - we use this regularly to finish and maintain the edges on our kitchen knives. This takes the tiniest amount of material from your blade but enough to keep it tip-top and sharp enough for daily use. I love the fact it keeps the angle equal on either side of the blade.... so a straight slice...no guesswork as you might get when sharpening on a steel!!! All this said the angle is not that shallow (45 degrees) - so it is perfect for blades that get abuse, knives for fishing, hunting or those used by my wife or parents in the kitchen!!! However for sharpening professional chef knives this angle may not be shallow enough for everyone. Mine are sharpened to around 12.5 degrees (each side) and this tool sharpens to 22.5 degrees each side. The plus side of this angle, is that is broad enough to not damage as quickly or easily as a shallower angle but still sharp enough to cut a tomato cleanly with no effort. A wothwhile investment for any household, chef, gardener, angler; I can highly recommend.

The Blademedic will never let you down, but its tungsten carbide sharpeners are extremely rough on steel and over time can take quite a lot off your precious knife. This is why I use either the white ceramic block (1000 grit), or its 'V' ceramic blades (also 1000 grit), or if sharpening serrated edges, the diamond taper (600 grit, not '1000' which I mistakenly said recently. Size: Smaller than many pocket knives at 3.9 x 1.25 x 0.45 inches (closed) and with a weight of 3.3 ounces, it is an entire sharpening kit that fits conveniently in your pocket. The tapered diamond sharpener clicks firmly back into its 10cm body using a magnetic block, about 1cm square. When extended the diamond taper also is secured by a similar magnetic block, roughly same measurements, 1cm square. These magnets are really useful to keep the taper from wagging like a dog's tail. Some notes: The ceramic pull-through sharpener is used as a finishing step to the carbide sharpener to finely hone the blade. It can also be used on its own to “touch up” relatively sharp blades. Again, only three to four strokes are necessary. The pull-through sharpeners are simple to use. You simply place the blade in the sharpener and pull it through with a little downward pressure applied. Beware the tungsten carbide blades because they are hard on your knife and can take quite a bit of steel away after only a few sweeps of the blade. Unless you have an old dog of blunt knife that needs to get sharp again, then use the tungsten carbide blades, but finish off with (2) the 600-grit diamond taper and finally (3) either the ceramic blades or that lovely ceramic block on the top. Note that the ceramic block is triangular-shape, enabling serrated blades to achieve a razor sharp edge. It’s designed to get into even the smallest serrations. It can also be used on its own like a benchstone. I highly rate it. Lanksy's Blademedic is reassuringly weighty in one's hand. Note it has torx bits for undoing the sharpener for cleaning or whatever. The Blademedic is an inexpensive, practical knife sharpener that groups several different knife sharpening tools into one. It is convenient to carry and easy to use so you never need to make do with a dull knife. Its cost is great value, it is highly durable, and nicely pocketable. Hopefully I'll be more careful and not lose this one. This is quality. Quality lasts long, and in the long run makes for great value. Why buy cheap ineffective knockoff when you need to cherish your knife? This alone is good enough reason to buy what is quite the classic sharpener. 5 / 5 Brilliant good value!

This is almost better in the flesh than I expected from the photo. It's a good size and very solid. One of the allen key screws did come loose it's true, but that's hardly a fatal flaw and was an easy fix. Lots of stuff on the other reviews about the rat-tail diamond rod but I find the magnets hold it in place OK. This is the first time I've used a tungsten 'v' sharpener that actually works and the same goes for the ceramic 'v'. I almost wish I'd just bought a good quality diamond rod though because this one works really well. Particularly good for the tips of kitchen knives which blunt easily and are hard to sharpen. However, the 'serrated ceramic' feature was what I got this for, because it's hard to find something for actual fine serrations. This is probably not as fine as I would have liked but probably that would have made it too fragile. Still, it worked well on the food processor blade (yes really). Overall a very solid quality and effective device that is also very portable; genuinely pocket sized.

This is a really handy gadget if you do a lot of work with your knife out in the field and want to keep it in top condition. At about the same size as a cigarette lighter, it sits nicely in the hand. There are four blade sharpening options provided - the carbide "V" and the tapered diamond-coated rod are designed for recovering severely damaged blades. Use them sparingly as they will take a LOT of metal off your blade, wearing it down REALLY quickly. The two options with more finesse are the ceramic "V" and the ceramic straight-edge. The "V" can be used to quickly bring sharpness back to a dulkled (but undamaged) straight blade. The longer ceramic edge is thoughtfully shaped to make it useful with either straight blades (where you would use it like a regular butchers rod) or for sharpening the elements of a serrated blade. The body of the device is metal and it's quite weighty. There's a hole in one end to attach it to a lanyard and the tapered sharpening rod is hinged to allow it to be unfolded, being held in place by a magnet. It's very nicely put together, feels good in the hand and is easy to hold sensibly, keeping your fingers out of the way when sharpening. I've tried several pocket sharpeners over the years and this is easily the most versatile. Just remember not to get too carried away with the carbide/diamond sharpeners. If you've got a half-decent pocket-knife a decent sharpener is a good investment and I'm very happy with this one. Well worth 5 stars.

The Lansky Sharpeners PS-MED01 Blade Medic is an excellent tool for anyone looking to sharpen their knives quickly and easily. The compact design makes it easy to carry with you wherever you go, so you can keep your blades sharp no matter where you are. One of the standout features of the Blade Medic is its versatility. It can be used to sharpen straight and serrated blades, as well as to repair damaged blades with its tungsten carbide and ceramic sharpening rods. This means that you can use it to maintain a wide range of knives, from kitchen knives to hunting knives to pocket knives. Another great feature of the Blade Medic is its ease of use. The sharpening rods are labeled with the type of blade they are designed for, so you don't have to worry about using the wrong one. The rods are also pre-set at the correct angle for each type of blade, so you don't have to worry about getting the angle right. Overall, I highly recommend the Lansky Sharpeners PS-MED01 Blade Medic for anyone looking for a versatile and easy-to-use knife sharpener. It's a great tool for maintaining your blades and ensuring that they are always sharp and ready for use.

I had bought a Spyderco Sharpmaker for maintaining the edge on my Spyderco UKPK and on my Victorinox Swiss army knives. For maintaining edges that are already in quite good shape, the Spyderco product was perfo. I then thought I would try the Spyderco Sharpmaker on some rather blunt kitchen knives. Now, whilst I believe you can get coarser grade of stone for the Spyderco Sharpmaker that will help to reprofile a blade, the two-stone set-up that comes with the box is not suited to this task. My kitchen knives that hadn't been properly sharpened in thirty years needed something else. Enter the Lansky Blade Medic. The tungsten carbide sharpener tears tons of steel off your blade. I probably wouldn't use this part of the Blade Medic on a good blade unless it was an emergency. For helping to reprofile a seriously blunt old kitchen knife, however, it works just fine. Then there are the ceramic stones for refining a knife edge. I would use this part of the Lansky Blade Medic on my better knives as a regular touch-up, between uses of the Spyderco Sharpmaker. The Lansky Blade Medic is a hefty, all-metal tool that is really well-made. More than that, it actually works. I am really pleased with this purchase and would definitely recommend it.

This was bought as a replacement for the faulty Gerber Bear Grylls field sharpener. Although larger and heavier, it's much sturdier due to the all-metal frame. It's still small enough to fit in a pocket, although you'll probably want to keep it in your pack and there is a lanyard hole which enables you to add a cord for attaching to keyrings, etc. Both the V-shaped carbide and ceramic sharpeners work very well, returning blunt knifes to razor sharpness in just a few strokes. Previous reviewers have complained about the flip-out diamond rod not being very secure and Lansky seem to have dressed this problem as instead of clips, the Blade Medic now has two magnets integrated into the body. One magnet keeps the rod in the closed position, while the other keeps it in the open position. Although they are both the same size, the one holding the rod closed has more surface area of the rod to work with, and it requires some force to open the rod. The magnet holding the rod open is less effective, however, as you will be pressing down on the rod, this isn't really much of an issue. Overall, a well-built sharpener that should be able to sharpen pretty much any blade you own and last a lifetime of use, too.

Very sturdy and works as it should. Two strong magnets hold the diamond file closed and/or open. Easy to use and ostensibly ideal for awkward blades. I purchased this for keeping my blades in good condition whilst backpacking, and opted for this over stones for the packability, simplicity and options i.e. the wavy edge of my Lansky "World Legal" (great design, not so great manufacture) would be a pain to keep good using the flat stones I already have. The "V" sharpeners will always leave the burr on the trailing side i.e. if you pull the blade through, the burr will be created on the right, and turning the medic around won't change that. So in order to keep a large burr from building on just one side, one has to push and pull the blade through. This is not a comfortable experience or easy with shorter blades. To knock the burr off, the ceramic strip would be ideal, but is realistically too short for clean strokes. And the diamond file is too aggressive for use after the ceramic "V". Not light (nearly as heavy as the knife). Having used it a fair few times now, I'm in two minds about it. For keeping a fine edge, this isn't very useful, but if your blade gets badly damaged in the middle of nowhere, the carbide "V" could be very handy, and in a pinch, a reasonable edge can be achieved. On paper it seems like a great tool, and it's really well made, but in practice it just doesn't perform. ________ Alternatively: I have opted to use a Felco combination stone suitable for recurved blades instead. I have no need to sharpen serrations in the field, and it might take a little longer to work dinks out with a stone than it would with the carbide "V", but in the long run, a simple stone will get the job done, and get it done much better. Stropping with my belt after the ceramic brings a mirror polished, shaving sharp edge to my blade - no need for complex gadgetry.

My favourite go to sharpener. 👍 Great quality and very easy to master. Won’t hesitate to buy more from this manufacturer in the future.

The Lansky QuadSharp Carbide/Ceramic Multi is easily the best knife sharpener I’ve used. It’s compact, super easy to use, and brings dull blades back to sharp in just a few passes. The different sharpening stages make it great for both quick touch-ups and more worn blades. Solid build quality and perfect for keeping knives ready without any hassle.
