The dad sleeps on his front. So as you push him down then him. Try that. If this doesn't work check the batteries and that the switch is on. If this still doesn't work then contact the supplier. There may be a fault.

If you share out the cards equally how do you have spare for putting in the bed to pick out?

You don’t take them from the bed if you land on the plus sign you take a card from another player and they lose their turn
