i am thinking about this as a present for someone with arthritis who cant hand knit now, does it do purl as well as knit stitches?

One side knit, the other purl.look on Utube for demos. You can make tuck stitches and cables by using hand tools. I love mine.

You cannot automatically do purl stitches within otherwise knit stitches. You mention yfw. Is this a lace pattern ? Then you are in luck. Machine knitted lace is the best and most easiest pattern to do. All you need to do is transfer a stitch left or right. This will leave needles without a stitch on them, but you leave this needles in working position B. Then it is just a matter of working two rows. So lace is transfer stitches row with all needles still in B, then knit two rows. Lace patterns are always based on every second row.

Can you use balls of yarn or must you use cones?

I buy 100g balls of and pull length of yarn from centre and then fit the ball into a narrow (5 inch jar or pot) find this works well for me or alternative is to unravel entire ball into a clean bucket.
