Arrived on the same day and supports PS4 games
The good: - The new controller is awesome! I recommend playing the free Astro's Playroom tech demo game that shows off all the features. That game is way better than it has any right to be and is a great introduction to the controller's capabilities. I hope lots of future games utilize the DualSense controller to the same extent. - Backwards compatible with PS4 games. I have a large library of physical PS4 games, so it's great that I get to still enjoy them on the PS5 with improved performance. Some PS4 games like FF7 Remake even include a free PS5 upgrade. It was easy to migrate my games and save files from my PS4 with an external drive and PS Plus cloud saves. - Fantastic performance. The load times are incredibly fast on most modern games. The bad: - WiFi connection is noticeably weaker than on the Xbox One X. I don't recommend using the online features unless you're using a wired connection. Even stuff like buying games in the PS Store is needlessly slow and unstable. - No themes or wallpapers. I liked to customize my PS4 with themes and custom wallpapers. Unfortunately the PS5 does not support that as of the writing of this review, so you're stuck with the boring default user interface. - Lack of exclusive games. Currently the PS5 does not have enough console-specific exclusives to make it stand out in today's gaming scene. The Demon's Souls remake and Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart are excellent, but we need more. I know we're also going to get FFXVI soon, but I doubt it will stay as a console exclusive for long. Overall: This is a great console, but I only recommend buying it for the backwards compatibility for gamers who own a lot of PS4 games. It's also worth getting if you don't already own a good gaming PC or an Xbox One X and want to play some next-gen games.

A fantastic console worth re-arranging your gaming setup for!
When I first unboxed the PS5, I was honestly wowed by how big the system was... And since I was aware that the PS5 is an absolute UNIT of a system when I bought it, I pre-emptively made room for it in my setup before it arrived. The PS5 system DWARFS my Wii U in sheer size, and it has quite the commanding presence in my gaming setup, as seen in the picture I've provided. Regardless... Given that the PS5 seamlessly plays PS4 games, I can now dive into a bunch of PS4-era games I missed out on, like Dreams, LittleBigPlanet 3, and WipEout Omega Collection. In regards to the PS5's own games, the only game I've had the chance to truly dive into was Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, a multi-platform game that I wound up starting to hyper-fixate on... But that's for another review. I've briefly played a few other PS5 games I bought alongside my system, and they look and play beautifully on my 4K 120hz Sony TV after configuring the PS5 to use 120hz and VRR. The DualSense controller the system comes with is highly responsive, and I find that the adaptive triggers feel trippy in a good way when they kick in, as games can change how the triggers feel depending on the context and what you're doing. The PS5 comes with Astro's Playroom installed, which is a short and sweet collect-a-thon platformer that lovingly references the history of the PlayStation brand all throughout, including little robots cosplaying as characters that made their mark on PlayStation history. I got a kick out of feeling the triggers resisting against my pushing in the controller demo that the game includes, to be honest. The home menu UI took me a bit to figure out at first, but it's easy to navigate and looks fairly slick. However, one disappointment I'd like to air out is that the PS5 doesn't have any themes, which the PS4 apparently had. In conclusion, the PS5's an overall great system, and I can't wait to dive into the games I got for it!

No complaints here
The PlayStation 5 is an absolute powerhouse! From the moment I unboxed it, I was blown away by its sleek design and futuristic look. The performance is top-tier, with lightning-fast load times thanks to the SSD, and the graphics are stunningโgames run smoothly in 4K with beautiful detail and fluid frame rates. What really sets the PS5 apart is the DualSense controller. The adaptive triggers and haptic feedback add an immersive touch that makes every game feel more engaging, whether you're drawing a bow or feeling terrain shifts under your virtual car's tires. Backward compatibility is another plus, letting me enjoy my PS4 library with better performance. The interface is clean and easy to navigate, and features like game hints and the ability to jump between activities make gaming more seamless than ever. Whether you're into single-player adventures or online multiplayer, the PS5 is a game-changer. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for the ultimate gaming experience!

Wow! Exceeds Expectations
MAY 11, 2023 + Controller design is sleek ... smaller buttons. Easier to hit what you want. + Share, Options and PS buttons have a profile. No more groping for them. (Hate the flush PS4 buttons.) + The on-screen keyboard is greatly improved. Much easier & faster. + And finally ... the graphics. *chef's kiss* It's like I have a new TV. Not exaggerating. Vibrant & crisp. I wasn't prepared for how beautiful games look. Didn't touch TV settings. Just plugged in the PS5 and voila! Games that I always had trouble with reading text are a thing of the past. Everything on screen is crystal clear. Had the PS5 shipped in Amazon packing for obvious reasons but was uneasy based on comments. Was sitting outside waiting when the driver arrived and placed the box next to me. The tape was mostly pulled away from the top flaps. One side of the box was torn and the PS5 box was clearly visible. My heart sank. Happily, I received a pristine PS5. The Sony box doesn't have a mark or dent on it. The seal was intact and everything inside was untouched. (Sadly, the literature is in Spanish & French only. Oops!) The console booted normally and plays discs perfectly. Encountered none of the issues others recently described. This is truly money well spent. If you game a lot and want a better experience but haven't managed to pull the trigger, I say go for it! I'm so happy with this console. It's absolutely better than PS4 and not just a little bit. I've been very happy with my PS4 and didn't expect wonders but the PS5 is a significant step up. ============================================================================== TIPS If your brand new PS5 isn't reading discs, don't panic. The optical scanner is on the outside of the slot, meaning that you must face the label in towards the console. For most people, it's counterintuitive. I unwittingly put the first disc in backwards and thought I had a console with a bad reader. Nope. It works fine. (Read June 6, 2023 update below regarding optical reader!) The UI on the PS5 is NOT like PS4. If you can't seem to get to the main menu, which they call the Control Center, hit the PS button twice. (some screens only require that you press it once) Do not put your PS5 on a base with 'cooling fans' in it. The PS5 pulls air in at the top and vents at the bottom. Bases with fans blow the hot air up and overheat the console. PS5 definitely does not run as hot as PS4. As long as there's breathing space around the PS5, it should be fine. Crashing - It's not constant but there's no way around it, especially if you're playing games that were originally created for PC. While PS5 is better than PS4 at rendering graphics, no PlayStation has the chops to render graphics like PCs with high end GPUs. The only PS games that have ever crashed on me are PC games that were ported to PlayStation. Happily, I've never lost data due to crashes. =================================================================== Update June 6, 2023: Today one of my CD games (Stray) tried to update. The console kept throwing an error code (CE-10005-6) that it couldn't read the disc. It's a new disc with no scratches or fingerprints. Moreover, the PS5 read this disc/installed the game the day I received the console. I knew it wasn't a disc issue so I laid the console on its side. Lo and behold, this time the PS5 read the disc. Reader issue.

Review After One Month
The PS5 arrived fairly quickly and was in good shape upon arrival. Now, regarding the console itself. The PS5 has a 'unique' design and is easily the biggest video game console I've ever seen. Due to its sheer size, I've had to place it horizontally within my media center where it's a bit difficult to access the disc drive. The console came with a short HDMI 2.1 cable (capable of supporting 120fps if both your TV and the game you're playing support it too) and a generously sized USB cable for plugging in the controller or charging it. The game "Astro's Playroom" comes preinstalled and is an enjoyable, albeit short, game which you can use to familiarize yourself with the controller and console. The console is advertised as having 825GB of storage, but only 667GB are usable so I'd recommend buying either an external HDD or a compatible nvme SSD for extra storage. PS5 games load extraordinarily fast and PS4 games enjoy faster loading times as well. Even XCOM2, which barely chugged along the PS4, runs smooth as butter. That said, install times are still rather long and it takes a while to transfer games to/from my HDD and SSD. Despite claiming 8k on the box, I'm not aware of any games that are capable of natively supporting it. While the console does support 4k resolution and 120fps, you'll need to find games that do so too. While some games will run at 4k/60fps, others will have resolution vs. performance modes that'll sacrifice either resolution or framerate to ensure the game runs well. The DualSense controller is appealing to the eye, has an ergonomic design, and the built-in haptic feedback is very pleasing to experience whenever a game supports it. My only complaint is that the battery life is somewhat poor and seems to charge slowly whenever plugged into something that's not a PS5. As such, I'd recommend charging the controller while playing a game or while the PS5 is in rest mode. The PS5's Wi-Fi adapter is an improvement over the PS4's. It supports both 2.4ghz and 5ghz. I've noticed my downloads running faster on the PS5 than the PS4 while on the same network. The PS5's backwards compatibility with PS4 games seems to work pretty well. Most games (especially ones with PS4 Pro patches) run extremely well and you can play them with a PS4 controller if you'd like. The only downside is that installing PS4 games seems to add to the PS5's "other" storage space. All games now have an install progress bar, and you can now separately delete DLC from games. As far as problems go, I've found that the PS5's UI leaves something to be desired and I've occasionally run into small software problems, usually whenever installing, moving, or deleting games. Additionally, when I plugged in my external HDD for the first time, half of its game library was seemingly deleted. I now suspect that it's due to most of the games not being fully installed, something that I've now remedied on the PS5 and have not experienced again. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase so far and find it to be a worthwhile upgrade to my aging PS4. If you own physical PS4 games or prefer physical game copies in general, buy the PS5 disc edition. If you go all digital, get the cheaper digital edition. Aside from the presence (or lack thereof) of an optical drive, I'm not aware of any difference between them.

Another console on the shelf
As an avid gamer and someone who owns all of the Sony consoles, this one was a no-brainer for me to buy. I don't play many console games now as I mainly game on my PC, but with Final Fantasy games being PS exclusives it was a needed purchase. Graphics output is amazing, with every game played so far jaw dropping. The refresh rate is also an improvement from the PS4. Another improvement is the fact that the disc drive isn't as loud as the PS4. The controller is one of those "make or break" parts of the console that can really define your gameplay. The new controller looks sexy, and feels great in my hands. The TouchPad has had improvements from the PS4 version, and the response is great. It's like if Microsoft and Sony had a controller love-child. Enough puns aside, this is a great console. I will always suggest purchasing a disc version over digital as having physical games will always be a way to keep games alive. Whether you're new to Sony, or returning for the next console...the PS5 is well on its way to being a great console, just needs more PS5 exclusives to really justify the full upgrade.
