What is the difference between a ledger and this journal please?

In a journal you keep record of every day transactions no matter the bookkeeping account they belong. One after another one in a single record, as they incur, by date, these transactions are registered as Income and Expences (in-out).  A ledger organize your transaction by type of account, such as Cash, bank, purchases, sales, capital, loans, credit, etc information for these accounts normally come from your journal (daily records). Records in ledgers are double always, to one account to another. Is there a difference between the double entry journal and the double entry ledger?

Hi there Christine. The journal is used when you are making entries that you can't enter anywhere else in your records. This would also be the home for you correction of errors. Double entry refers to the practice of double entry accounting. The General Ledger holds all the accounts for recording transactions and the Journal is where you can record your correction of errors or other transactions that don't have a place anywhere else.
