Which ear does the actual head set cover i.e. the left or right ear?

Both! You can flip the mic arm over so that it can work on either ear.

This doesn’t work with either my iphone xr nor my laptop 6. can you tell me why?

Does this fit a alcatel mobile phone

Hi, I bought the USB version of the headset as I required to use it with my laptop. The version showing in your picture has a 3.5mm connector. Most mobile phones 9(less newer models of iPhone) have a 3.5mm socket for head phones so it may work but I cannot be certain. Hope this helps.
