Gypsy Empire : Dillon, Eamon: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: It is OK - It is OK Review: Brilliant Book - Brilliant insight into the Irish Traveler community. Focus on the family feuds, boxing, and crime aspects! I cannot give five stars because I'd like to read more about the culture and history, but for what I purchased brilliant read into the dangerous lives of traveler families.

Disturbing
The general theme is a portrait on senseless and pointless violence. Not just in this tribe but all.

Gypsy lifestyle
Good book very interesting about the traveller clans, sad for certain innocent families when old old scores are settled for past family members. Would recommend to read

I am a lawyer and had a case involving Irish Travelers from Ireland. I had been unaware of the existence of this nomadically oriented, Gypsy- type people -- about 30.000 in Ireland, where most call home. This was the only book of its kind I was aware of, so for me it's value was great (Wikipedia has useful information too, but Gypsy Empire deals with specific communities, families and individuals). The author is a journalist, and his approach is journalistic. Although, the author carefully deposits politically correct disclaimers that there are many fine and honest Travelers, his overall revelations and discussions are negative (I am not disputing the truth of disproportionate negative realities in this culture). In my my personal dealings with "my" individual Travelers and family members, I have experienced interesting and pleasant people who have been accurate and honest with me. One criticism of this book, which may be misplaced: the chapters (s) devoted to the existence, culture and history of bare knuckle boxing was for me too detailed and, therefore, draggey -- but others may feel differently. A worthwhile, educational and easy read.

Very revealing look inside the world of Irish gypsy travellers. Caveat emptor for anyone who hires the travellers to do work.
