The stories are wonderfully interwoven and beautifully photographed, with clever writing and stellar performances from all the cast, with a special shout out to Meryl Streep who rises to the challenge of playing the iconic and well-loved Julia Child with her usual acting brilliance. This is exactly what happened with my husband, who initially was just being sweet when he joined me to watch "Julie & Julia". By the end of the film, he was so motivated to try making Boeuf Bourguigion, that he was out shopping the next morning for all the ingredients, and served up a Boeuf that night which certainly did Julia proud! I can't promise that everyone will be so lucky to have a spouse or other family member become so inspired, but I will go so far as to say that the odds are in your favor. Regarding the specs of the DVD, this is the PAL version, and includes a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, along what is now bittersweet commentary from Nora Ephron, who sadly passed away in 2012, three years after she made this magical film. The photo of the DVD and bonus booklet is pretty accurate as far as size goes. I mention this only because I had it in my head that the book would be a hardcover, and possibly bigger than the DVD package. Happily, its small size is great for slipping into a handbag or pocket and taking to the market. All in all, one of the best DVD purchases I've made in a while. This movie is all about food and they translate this subject visually so well, you can almost taste, smell the food they are talking about / cooking in the movie. Furthermore, this is a great biography movie how two normal people, like you and me, discover their calling in life or just simply their passion / a purpose. I love Julia Child's story that even in the less likely stage and circumstances in life, you can find your calling. Its never too late and you should definitely never give up. Opportunities are not tied to young age but your will of successeding. Meryl Street as usual excels in her performance, as does Stanley Tucci and the husband of 'Julie'. Amy Adams, in my view, could have played with more gusto and less whiny. My very manly partner had been resisting this movie for a while, one day he was bored .... well and the rest is history, he loves the movie. In fact he joined me at my cooking classes and now enjoys cooking himself! In my view this is a big impact after watching one movie. Although its quite good I wouldn't rave about it, and was disappointed that there wasn't a huge amount about Julia child's story. It was however a light, sometimes funny film for people who like cooking. Just don't expect it to live up to the book!
