With an Introduction and Notes by Adam Roberts, Royal Holloway, University of London. Homer's great epic describes the many adventures of Odysseus, Greek warrior, as he strives over many years to return to his home island of Ithaca after the Trojan War. His colourful adventures, his endurance, his love for his wife and son have the same power to move and inspire readers today as they did in Archaic Greece, 2800 years ago. This poem has been translated many times over the years, but Chapman's sinewy, gorgeous rendering (1616) stands in a class of its own. Chapman believed himself inspired by the spirit of Homer himself, and matches the breadth and power of the original with a complex and stunning idiom of his own. John Keats expressed his admiration for the resulting work in the famous sonnet, 'On first looking into Chapman's Homer': 'Much have I travelled in the realms of goldโฆ' This new Wordsworth edition of Chapmanโs Homer contains accessible annotation, and a detailed introduction that places his masterpiece in the context of his own day, and discusses its influences on later poets. Review: Wordsworth Editions: Homer's Odyssey translated by George Chapman - I bought this because it is the early modern Chapman translation. It really is excellent. Might not be to everyone's taste or philosophy of translation, and if you want an easier read there are loads to choose from. Book itself is surprizingly good quality for the very reasonable price. It has a slim but informative introduction, a glossary, and helpful notes. Review: Perfect read - Great book, incredible story.

Excellent English rendition
While it's hard to say this without ever having read the original Greek, I dare say this is an excellent English rendition of The Odyssey. I can only imagine it is as rythmic as the original, which is quite a lot to say considering that translating Greek into English while keeping the metric of the text must be quite challenging. Although I must make clear I never read any other English translation of The Odyssey, my final impression of this translation was that of a fine example of unmissable ancient literature made accessible to present times.

Truly one of my favourite novels!
I'm not too well-read in the classics, but I can say for sure that Homer's 'Odyssey' will be a favourite, no matter how many of the timeless novels I read! At first, I was thinking that the novel was a little heavy (not literally!) for casual reading, but after familiarising myself with the characters (there aren't too many to learn), I found that it read as smoothly as many 20th century books.

Getting used to better interpretation as time goes by
Hard work reading this - I had forgotten that it was issued in poetic form with old fashioned language. Getting used to better interpretation as time goes by!.
