Pretty illustrations but a little difficult for a small child to follow, especially when they want to read the words. Good storytelling. Be aware: Barely has any words in it. Multiple pages only have a picture of the character. This book is very "artsy" and symbolic just to give you an idea, which although some people may find off-putting or whatever it is a good book to have an open discussion with your kids. Ex: My 4yo initially found this book to be a bit confusing and took some of the images a bit too literally, but is still a favorite in our book rotation. Would recommend. The story and the feelings are so well illustrated and the taunts, the shame, the naive remarks that hurt, it's all there. It's very powerful and it all comes out in the end. The main character learns how to stand up for herself. It's a triumph!
