Finally the Decaf expresso I have been searching for! *by G***N on May 9, 2023* Let me say a couple of things first.1. I placed the order with Amazon and the package arrived in my mail about 5 days later. Pretty darn quick, and I suspect the further you are away from the Onyx Roasters people, yours could take a few more days. But I was impressed.2. Dig this! The coffee was roasted 3 days ago. How did they do that? Obviously that’s a company that is trying to do its best to make sure that you get fresh coffee and that your coffee tasting experience will be top notch. I have never received coffee this fresh, except when I picked up the coffee at the roasters store. I am really so disappointed with the Illy and Lavazza coffee I get from Amazon. I even tried to buy them directly from the company and I have never received a package that was less than 10 months old. It’s not unusual to get a package that is 12-15 months old from either of these Italian roasters. So already I am in a different place with this Onyx Coffee.3. It’s expensive -10 oz for $21-thats a dollar commitment to coffee. So I did some research to make me feel better about the cash. All of the writing about these guys is in superlatives. “Among the best in the world”. “Carefully roasted. Thoughtful, imaginative.” And so on.So I write the company directly. All I want to know is if I follow the Brew guide that they have put on YouTube, can you guarantee me that it won’t be bitter. That’s all I wanted.Here was her response. “I can’t tell you if it will be bitter or not because everyone tastes these flavors differently, but I do know that it will be delicious.”” That’s all she told me.Ok that seemed like a fair answer to me. I plucked my $21 down.4. Let me also make a comment about the Brew Guides. I really appreciate it that Onyx has gone to the trouble to put a brew guide on YouTube. Why don’t other people do this? It was so helpful, especially since I only bought 10 ounces. I had to get it right and didn’t want to spend my time and my coffee trying to dial it in. So they said. 19 gr in and 50 gr out. Wow-that’s a lot out, and it has to be done in 24 seconds. Plus up to 27 seconds. I’ve never taken more than 34 grams out. How was I going to get that all out in 24 seconds? So I just set my grinder coarser by 3 notches, so from about 13 on the Turin grinder up to about 16. I gotta get a lot out so it has to be coarser.I can’t believe that I hit it right on the nose but I did. 49.5 gr out in 24 seconds. I also made a cup for my wife and hers was 50.5 gr out in 27 seconds so I dialed it in where it needed to be.5. So the taste. Well I really don’t know how to describe this coffee as a decaf because it doesn’t taste decaf at all, but more like a regular caffeinated coffee. There is much in the description about fruits and brightness with a dark chocolate background. So I’ve got the beautiful sweetness-but not as bright as I thought it would be. There is definitely a dark chocolate background. But here’s the thing- I’m not seeing the fruits above and beyond the overall sweetness of the pour. I suspect it will get fruitier over the next couple of weeks, because it is so fresh, and I may try using the the variable flow rate that is available on my Profitec Expresso machine, but actually I love it the way it is.I wouldn’t change anything in this coffee. It’s great, unlike any decaf I have ever had, and more competitive with some of the best caffeinated expresso shots I have ever had.So buy this confidently. It’s wonderful even after just 3 days after roasting. It’s likely to get better and now I have to try some of the other Onyx blends because they have to be as good or better. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Decaf That Tastes Like It Should *by D***L on September 15, 2023* I got a familiar brightness and acidity similar to a typical Columbian coffee. I need another cup and maybe a different brewing process to get more of the other flavor notes. Chocolate was there. I was surprised at how much flavor this punched for being a decaf. It being freshly roasted helped immensely. Overall, best decaf I've had. I'll be back! ### ⭐⭐ Unpleasant flavor *by E***E on January 13, 2024* I let the coffee bean rested for at least two weeks but the flavor of it tastes like without resting. It is sour, and tasted like soy sauce. I don't know why.
