A lot of people like the pellets because they create less mess. Mash looks like the crumb stage when making pastry etc. The benefit is it takes the chickens longer too eat so they are less likely to get bored.r people say they prefer because it keeps chickens occupied longer because it takes more to take on the same amount of nutrition they need. so it is your preference really what you want to clean use pellets or you want to keep the chickens occupied and not get bored in which case it is a Mash. I have to admit my chickens prefer the mash and I have tried both there not that impressed with the pellets. If so you can try a bit of each and see which ones you and your Chicken prefer. if you've got the chickens from someone I suggest that you ask them what they were feeding and carry on with that type of feed. If poss. There are minor differences between brands, but nothing major, Try an organic brand. Be aware there is chick crumb for the young and different food if you are raising them for meat.
