After looking at a number of sewing books, I thought this was the most appropriate for a beginner without being overwhelming. Anyone could pick this up, learn the basics and start with the simple (but nice) projects and feel like they accomplished a lot in a little time. The projects start with basic skills (Your First Seam) and build from there, and are appropriate for kids without being juvenile. The book, however, is more focused on girls rather than being gender agnostic. The book also enables the development of self-confidence; I love the sections on Dealing With Mistakes, safety, etc. If someone progresses through this book, they will have a great set of basic skills that will enable them to create much more complicated projects. Review: I have improved and I’m new at this! - Learning and actually improving! Great tips and helpful. I have this alongside Martha Stewart book on sewing. Both just as helpful.
