With producer Stephen Street, the Smiths created a subtly shaded and skilled album, one boasting a fuller production than before. Morrissey and Marr laboured hard over the songs, working to expand the band’s sound within their boundaries. In doing so they created the classic tracks "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish," "Girlfriend in a Coma," "Stop Me if You Think You’ve Heard This One Before," and "I Won't Share You". This, the highest charting of all their albums, easily offers a summary of the band’s considerable strengths, and went on to be certified Gold in both the UK and US. Review: Excelente artículo! Review: Perhaps Their Best? - Great album received in great condition. Arguably their best album, even though I imagine most would consider The Queen Is Dead as their magnum opus. This album divulges more from their usual style, exploring more orchestral layers, more rockabilly, and more sardonic themes. I mean, check out songs like 'An Unhappy Birthday' or 'Girlfriend In A Coma' where Morrissey turns the sinister into something that, on the surface, seems playful and melodramatic. 'A Rush and a Push and The Land is Ours' is such a strange yet invigorating song to start the album, with an almost cabaret feel and the instrumentation borders on baroque pop, something that feels uniquely unlike them. This album could've embarked them on another phase in their musical trajectory, but unfortunately became their farewell. Still highly recommended.

Great starter Smiths album.
This is the first album I ever listened to by The Smiths, and it is definitely the one that got me hooked on their music. There's enough of a balance between catchy, poppy tracks and ones that are a little less accessible, which leaves the listener with the overall impression that the band is (was) versatile and capable of truly carving out their own unique niche within the world of music. At a mere 10 songs, it's just long enough to give you a healthy sampling of what these guys were able to do. It's a great album, and I'd strongly recommend it, especially to those who want a good starting point within The Smiths' catalogue.

Smith's last album
Great melodies on this one. Guitar seems more scaled back on some of the songs. "Stop Me if You Think You Heard This One Before" is the classic track. Great lyrics by Morrissey.

...it goes to show how little you know...
for me, the best example of The Smiths musical and lyrical style in one place. This album is about having so much passion for something (hating, loving, obsession, politics, loneliness, ect.) you feel it to be a crime (or almost a crime). Hence the title; Strangeways is a prison in England. And the cover art: a still from East of Eden; Morrissey was so obsessed with James Dean he wrote a book about him (which is hard to find, by the way). And filmed a video in his hometown. Morrisey's wit and art with his lyrics and Marr's amazing musical talent contrast, contradict, encourage, and compliment each other and the listener.

Me recuso a escrever mais palavras, vou apenas sugerir: ouça LAST NIGHT I DREAMT SOMEBODY LOVED ME e tente não pensar em sua vida amorosa. Impossível. The Smiths é isso: ouvir as músicas e se transportar a um estado de contemplação, de admiração e respeito por essa banda maravilhosa.
